Downstacking messy garbage is very tricky business. I've been trying to notice patterns and things that should be avoided but I still haven't improved much. We should keep trying to compile research so that we can be more efficient downstackers. Unfortunately i'm not much better at survivor than you Paul.

Here are some things that I avoid (i'll leave out mirrored situations) that you did a few times (or something similar):

When the 2nd garbage hole is one space to the left, avoid using an S to break the 1st garbage hole.

To avoid even more skimming, avoid this situation for the 3rd garbage hole.

The hard part about downstacking is that you are forced into this situation many times, or your other options suck just as much. Thats why I'm so stumped.

I'm not much of a t-spin player, so my main strategy is to downstack lol.

I'm not sure how the ratings work on TOJ but I tried to play people higher rank than me. ( I don't really play though)

Anyone else love saying "hi" on TOJ? Its the reason I play. They almost always do it back! Unlike TF players who have no souls.

A 5 Downstack combo which clears garbage is better than T-spinning over messy garbage.

yeah, if you are referring to 31 a t-spin would have worked. Downstacking was just as good though. He was probably bracing for some garbage.

If you meant at 28, he would have ended up with something similar to this, which is still okay:

but I think he made the right decision to downstack through the messy garbage. This is where he was at by 34 seconds:

As you can see he didn't do the t-spin so he wasn't able to cancel part of the garbage. But he no longer had messy garbage to deal with. Instead he had something relatively easy to clear.

yeah I meant your fumen - you can ds whenever you want, but tspins only come once every 2 or 3 seconds. And was left without a tspinnable opportunity, and had easy garbage, yes, but a lower apm, and after the tspin he can ds just as well and get easy garbage.

:X its more of a choice. You can do either or as long as you have garbage(for downstacking). Even if you watched a game with Hebo or blink playing they ignore some t-spin opportunities. Its completely dependent on the situation you are in.

Unless you wait for garbage its not a 100% chance that you will cancel it. And even if you do wait for garbage it gives them more time to build up, which means they will send more lines than you.

If it were me I would downstack and t-spin where practical and convenient.

This is a game of me playing in a whay that bothers me, I do play well overall i think but i do something wrong since i come up to akward situations sometimes.. Is it just bad stacking, should i focus more on ds?
And if it is bad stacking what are ure suggestions that i do?

I haven't looked examined the entire thing but...
There's some really odd situations where it'd have made more sense to clear out the messy garbage or at least attempt to create a T-spin out of it. Do you recall what you were thinking at these points?

00:39 - Would have been better to just downstack or create a T-spin setup.
00:43 - Here I assumed you were attempting to create another T-spin. Especially when you had a T piece in hold already, followed by a square block to create the overhang (00:46).

01:08 - Was this just mistaking the Z piece for an S piece? You would have been better off placing that I piece elsewhere, and stacking the two Z pieces on that column. Building upwards while maintaining no messy holes are created.

01:17 - Again sort of like 1:08 point. You place the Z/S piece in places where it'd normally not fit. Essentially creating more difficult garbage for yourself. You could have placed the S piece down on the side first, followed by the Z piece. Here's a fumen of what I would have done so high up. It's not the greatest downstacking but it's to ensure that I live. Perhaps someone else will come up with a more efficient pathway.

The lack of downstacking in that particular match is what costed you the game, so I think focusing on that aspect would greatly improve your game, especially considering that your speed is already pretty decent. It's personal preference, but when I receiving rows of messy garbage, it's my biggest priority to get through that stuff as quickly as possible so that I don't have to deal with it later at a more dangerous point of time. With straight line garbage, you can relax a little better.

Edit: Just check out your other video. You didn't pretty well on that one and downstacked pretty decently. So I'm guessing it was just an unlucky match here. Otherwise, it might just be a case of downstacking a little too late?

One thing is extremely clear. You play a much more offensive game than I do. I'm pretty much usually on defence.

I recommend you play some downstack type games. They allow you to focus on that single aspect and eventually you will downstack more efficiently and less awkwardly. From your replay it seems like you are still learning t-spins. I would focus first on downstacking without any t-spins. Once you can do that adding in t-spins will be much easier, and you will do it at the right time.

In my opinion downstacking is the most important skill. Many blockbox players that switched to TF for the tournament did very well even with their lack of t-spin skill. This is partially because of their speed while stacking, but I also think that they were great downstackers. If you can downstack well you will be able to send any garbage back to your opponent. Eventually you will have a better grasp on t-spins and you will be able to see the opportunities to do them while downstacking.
