STEPMANIA

Dunno how many of you are familiar with this game (otakus, bemani fans and O2jammers may recognize it), but the gist/hype is it's a 4 button rhythm game with 4 fingers--both indexes and middles--dedicated on comfortably positioned keys. I might expand this thread into a how-to and whatnot if it garners enough interest. (If you didn't catch on in the video above, I'm playing a 6 key version--yes, the game can become harder if you wish to explore the realm of Stepmania Solo!)

For now, those who are proficient and have played a few packs can check out a compilation of simfiles I've thrown into a RAR and a handy manual to accompany it.

What the manual covers:
- How to install Stepmania and customize the basics
- Patterns which increase or decrease difficulty
- Song list with each song included with a subjective difficulty assigned by me according to my subjectively assigned associated pattern (found in the tabs at the bottom)

For sure! I usually don't stream much Stepmania because I can only stream 25fps and it looks choppy and unappealing.

I'm surprised how few people from the Stepmania play Tetris, and how few Tetrisers play Stepmania, because they are very similar:
- 4 primary keys in Tetris (CW spin, CCW spin, left, right, commonly remapped to something easier)
- 4 primary keys in Stepmania (Left, Down, Up Right, commonly remapped to something like DFJK)
- both games fingers remain stationary
- both games require exceptional precision, speed, and dexterity
- Nobody on either game has truly hit a hard skillcap
- DAS = Speedmod
- Finesse = Patterns (jumpstream, jackhammers, trills, bursts)

The 2 biggest differences are
1: You can control the pace of the Tetris match and has a better game structure for PvP versus Stepmania in which the speed and complexity is up to the simartist.
2: Tetris has upstacking and downstacking, an ongoing puzzle VS Stepmania which has a fixed amount of arrows in songs which you can improve on individually

I play a bit of stepmania since I play a lot of music games. It's fun if I just want a quick game, but I'm not that good. I suck at any kind of fast pattern with multiple chords or doubles or whatever you call them in SM.

I have all the Otaku's Dream packs so I just play random songs from them when I play.

I used to play, I recorded some songs too:

Cant say if this helped me with tetris or not, maybe some finger coordination

Nice guys! The OD community is still going strong if I remember correctly. I think Gundam_Dude has taken over a lot of projects. And I remember first passing that Final Fantasy song, so much fun

I have tried stepmania after reading this and maybe i will play it more, because it seems easier than other simliar games (beatmania or o2jam). Osu is still my favorite, but i am trying to become more versatile.

If you do find you want to try again, I check the "manual" I posted in the OP. It has instructions accompanied with links and pictures on how to install Stepmania 5 and reduce lag.

IIDX and Pop'n are actually much much harder than Stepmania, simply because you have to move your fingers to different keys.

I play stepmania sometimes, but i prefer just going to the arcade and playing ITG.

I'm kinda shitty atm, this vid was made after a 6 month hiatus... I usually get 85~ on quasar and can do some easy 13's:

QuoteLike many setups here, it is useful if your opponent doesn't move and you get 4 Ts in a row.

Ooh ITG, haven't played in yeeeears since they took away all the machines in VA (~2008). I could do most 12's but could never pass Bloodrush or any 13's. I'd usually get too tired near the crossovers in Quasar. It's hard to find stepping game buddies when most people who have claimed to have played DDR can't even pass easier stuff, especially in a place where arcades aren't a big thing. Most of my IRL Stepmania/ITG friends have moved on and we don't talk anymore.
