Teach me how to play TGM

So I got this new fancy arcade joystick, and a version of TGM. However, I feel so awkward when playing it, not to mention INCREDIBLY slow.

Here's my problem: With the joystick, I position the piece (left or right), and then press up down to lock the piece. This seems hard to do for me because when I do the up down maneuver sometimes I accidentally push the piece left or right.

Explain to me how the TGM control scheme is not absolutely horrific... and how to use it.

Play Death mode; then you only have to press down, not up.

Open your stick and change the restrictor to 4-way. If you bought a stick that does not have real arcade parts, you can alternatively do a cheap mod to use a real Sanwa restrictor or replace the stock stick altogether.

use a 180 move for that

instead of left up down, you do up left down
