I think of it in terms of movement and key presses and I came up with this:

Green = Only Hard drop required
Yellow = Hard drop + 1 movement key
Orange = Hard drop + 2 different movement keys (Das to wall and back)
Red = Hard drop + same movement key pressed 2x

*I only did initial rotations because it would take too long to do all the rotations.
*I assume DAS to wall and back is faster than sideways 2x but that's not always true

It seems most of the worst positions to place in are about 3 from the right.
If you make a gap 3 from the right, you eliminate the need to stack there (Except for 1 piece: your I piece)
Most of the previous pieces I marked in red would not need to be placed there at all.
So I would think the best way to place a gap, due to fewer key presses, would be like this:

*This is assuming you would like to start out with a tetris.

Genius! That makes so much sense, Someone2knoe!

Note that this only works when stacking for Tetrises, though.

Thanks . I think more people should really look into it. It is probably the fastest way to stack for a tetris.

It's definitely ideal for bb where there is not much line clear delay and tetrises are the most powerful.
I wrote a note above the last diagram to point out its for tetrises.

Well I'm not so sure about Sprint on TF. Because of the limited space on the right side you might have to skim (But it's not always true that you need to skim so it might work). The ideal way to play on Sprint is only tetrises ( because of line clear delay). Thats my theory on why maserati's time is not as fast on Sprint than other players who are slower than him in other versions with less line clear delay. Also because they might be faster tappers too though. .

It would also take a while to adjust to this way if you place your gap elsewhere currently. It is definitely worth learning though.

On second thought, IMO "tap tap" is faster than "DAS tap" because with both you press down twice, but with one you have to wait on DAS and autorepeat delays. Regardless, the keys saved by movement is neglible, especially if you need to rotate more to fit in the split platforms. (A 9-wide platform makes it easier to place without rotating.)

DAS tap is faster if it is pre-charged and rate is sufficiently fast (e.g. Instant, 60hz).

Pretty much only in TGM (especially with stick).

You don't pre-charge in other games? That's what diagonal input is for.

To clarify, hold left or right across multiple placements. Multiple DAS cost you little more than neutral, and the DAS tap after DAS in the same direction costs you little more than just tap.

Diagonal input? In other games? I don't follow. Is this a shmup reference or something? I don't play shmups...

I think what Kitaru means by Diagonal input is 8-way controls
In other games as in not one of the TGM series
It's all about the love

sure if you've just placed a piece against the left wall, and you're putting the next piece one column away from the left wall, it would be fastest with diagonal movement on, keeping left held while dropping the 1st piece, and doing a DAS + tapback with the 2nd piece. the rest of the time you're probably better off tapping twice.

Kitaru

Now that I think about it a bit more, my tapping speed on one key is around 7hz, 8hz at best. Conveniently enough, this works out to 7~9 frames between repeat taps. My DAS is usually set at 7~8 frames delay and Instant rate. I'm fairly confident that hold toward roll away down is comparable to tap tap roll down for me... perhaps better. My tapping speed sucks. :<

ditto. but i just made a small change in my key setup based on what i read here:
http://cat.inist.fr/?aModele=afficheN&cpsidt=15381706
before i was using my right index and right ring fingers (J and L keys) for left and right, but now i'm using my index and middle fingers (J and K keys). maybe it will make a small difference.

Kitaru

My tapping action is in the wrist or arm, so changing fingers would really only serve to confuse me in regards to my layout. I'd be insufferably slow if I was rapidly twitching the finger itself.

Sorry for dragging this discussion so far off topic, haha.
