I'm posting this for those who are having trouble with uploading their own avatar or doesn't know how to resize them to 120x120 pixels. Just post the image(s) here (however big it is) and I'll post you the avatar that you can use on this site. Some parts of your avatar might be cut off on its edges.

They can be animated ones too as long as they don't end up as a large file in the end. I will try my best to compress them for you so its below 100kb.

Would it not be easier to just have an automatic resize like ever other forum ever?

Most forums scale the images down to whatever restriction it is. If it's 100x100pixels and you upload a 180x120pixel avatar, it will just scale it down to 100x60pixel which is actually a rectangle shaped avatar. It would look awful to have rectangle and square avatars throughout our website and forums especially when you upload something that's like 200x50.

I can force it to resize to 120x120 but it will make the image look distorted.

you should make it force resize to 120x120 for the people who are too lazy to resize. let them have a messed up looking avatar for being lazy.

They can just upload a really big image or wallpaper and it will take forever to load a 120x120 resize.

I think a crop feature where it will pop up their image and they are forced to select 120x120 pixels of it to proceed will be the best solution. I will see if this is possible next week.

add a size limit of like 200kb w/ the auto resize, and there won't be that take long to load problem.  do you know how? and yeah, the crop sounds like best solution.

Avatars are tied in with the same system as photo gallery so if I put a limit of 200kb it will be the same limit for all images uploaded to the site. Right now I think it's at 800kb.

If you're going to care that all the avatars are square, then just offer an option to either crop or resize and screw up proportions. In some images it won't even matter if the aspect is a little off, and it'll save people trouble when uploading avatars. Resize it at upload, and then it won't make much different to the loading of subesquent pages if it needs to be resized.

Yep manual cropping is what I'm thinking of where the user can select which part of the avatar they want. Maybe put it on registration page too or all areas where they can upload avatar. I think theres only 2 places, registration and in account settings.

I'd actually take the avatar thing off registration. People should register first and be made to faff around with an avatar second.

hienwa

Well it is optional so they can always skip that part. As well as the other 3 steps to the registration, the first step is the only one required really. The only fields that are required are bold and has asterisk by it.

an auto-resizer on this site would be awesome

It's not a program, but Photobucket does resizing of animated gifs pretty nicely.
