Ok i'm just building on to stuff

Argument 1
1) Person C states a statement.
2) the statement is false.
3) Person C has stated false statement.

Obviously if 2) is not true (e.g. C stated a statement that is true) then 3) is not applicable.

Argument 2
1) Person C states a statement.
2) The statement is "Trolling has no purpose"
3) The purpose of trolling is "to divert attention" (from dictionary)
4) Since 3) and 2) are mutually exclusive, one is true and the other is false.
5) since 3) is true, 2) is false
6) Since 2 is false, Person C's has stated a false statement.
Argument 2.5
1) Person C states a statement.
2) Person C says "ants are the size of really big elephants"
3) Since elephants are clearly very big, the idea of the sentence is not lost if you change it to:
"ants are the size of elephants"
4) Since 3) is false, person C has stated a false statement.

Argument 3
1) Person C states a statement
2) The statement is "Trolling has no meaningful purpose"
3) The meaning of meaningful is "to have purpose" (from dictionary)
4) Hence 2) can be rewritten as "Trolling has no purposeful purpose", or "trolling has no purpose", and THE IDEA OF THE SENTENCE is unchanged
5) The purpose of trolling is "to divert attention" (from dictionary)
6) Since 4) and 5) are mutually exclusive, one is true and the other is false.
7) Since 5) is true, 4) must hence be false.
8) Since 4) has the same contextual message as 2), 2) must also be false.
9) Since 2) is false, Person C has stated a false statement.

Discuss.

I think you'll find meaningful means "to have meaning" not to have purpose. In the context it's used in at least.

Learn how dictionaries work :I

k go.
And to have meaning you can look up "to have meaning", its synonymous to "to have a purpose".

Mean 1 (i.e. most popular/most used)

Definition: To have in the mind, as a purpose, intention, etc.; to intend; to purpose; to design; as, what do you mean to do ?

You don't understand how dictionaries work, clearly. Just because one definition in one dictionary is X, does not mean that you can interpret every use of that word ever to mean X (and mean it literally). The fact that it's meaning 1 is irrelevant also.

Maybe you should also understand that detailed interpretation of language is retarded, and what people mean is far more important than the semantics and fine detail of what they actually say.

Ok, so rewrite
"Trolling has no meaningful purpose" in another way without the word meaningful.

Clearly trolling has a meaningful purpose for the troll, to grab attention etc.

So if i said "YOu're a dickhead" and i meant "i love you" then this doesnt matter because what i meant was completely contradictory to what i actually said(NO INSULT INTENDED)? What they say is what they say. You can reasonably assume their meaning from the context of the statement, but literally interpreting it in this way deems a very very reasonable result.

It is VERY reasonable to assume that the statement:
"Trolling has no meaningful purpose" has the meaning "trolling is just for the sake of trolling".
Notice that "Trolling has no purpose" also has the meaning "trolling is just for the sake of trolling".
however the troll trolls because they get a giddy happy feeling when people respond to them, and that is CLEARLY meaningful to them.

"Trolling has no universally useful purpose"
"Trolling contributes nothing meaningful to anyone besides the troll"

Moderation on this place has really gone downhill. This thread is nothing but trolling itself.

What about the entertainment value that other people get from the troll?

HOW MANY PEOPLE LOL'ED at the O-SPIN Quadruple?
How many people LOL'ED at caffeines super useful L-Spin?

If you post a funny joke, does that not provide entertainment value?

If you troll a bad post, does that not also provide entertainment value?

How are either of those trolling? They're both cases of someone being deliberately ignorant to make an obvious joke. Which is completely separate to trolling, which is being deliberately ignorant to piss people off.

So if you are deliberatly ignorant to make an obvious joke,
But it still pisses people off, it is not trolling?

Rosti_LFC

No, it is not trolling.

XaeL

So if you are deliberatly ignorant to piss someone off,
But people find it extremely funny, and are unable to tell that you were actulaly trying to piss someone off, it IS trolling?

Rosti_LFC

Nope, then it's still not trolling.

This thread isnt trolling, its an important look at what trolling is.
without CLEAR knowledge of what a troll post is you wouldnt be able to know whether to ban people or not.

Ok what about:
As long as it is "funny" enough, it will not be counted as trolling?

Pretty much. Only non-failed intentional trolling is trolling.

Or obvious trolling. Such as this thread.

So if i posted a troll post, would i be trolling?
