Palatris is a Finnish browser game with both multiplayer and singleplayer. It's one of the numerous Java based browser games over at Aapeli.com. The Finnish enterprise behind these games decided to go international at Playforia.net, so Palatris is available in different languages. The German offshoot is called Platris, the English offshoot is called Dualtris. Through historical reasons, you find the most activity and the most relevant leaderboards over at the Finnish variant.
Gameplay
Gameplay feels like that of a classic Tetris game: one Preview, no Hold, memoryless Randomizer (totally random piece sequence). Rotation system is the same as in 1989 Game Boy Tetris (difference: only 1 rotation direction, minor wallkicks).
Singleplayer
In all modes, the goal is to score as high as possible. Either the time is limited or the gravity (block falling speed) will increase. In latter case, the level will switch after a fixed time (usually after 1 minute) until level 15 is reached. There are 6 different modes:
- Normal: level increases every minute
- Marathon: level increases every 10 minutes
- Child's Play: mode uses monominoes, dominoes and trominoes beside Tetrominoes
- Extreme: mode uses Pentominoes beside tetrominoes
- One minute: game stops after 60 seconds
- 5 minutes: game stops after 5 minutes
Every placed piece (block) scores 1 point. Line clears are also rewarded, dependendent on how many lines are cleared at once:
- Single: 10 points
- Double: 30 points
- Triple: 60 points
- Tetris: 100 points
- Pentris: 150 points
All modes have daily, weekly, monthly, and all-time leaderboards.
Multiplayer
There are two 2-player modes. Both modes have a chat window.
Co-operative
This mode works similar to the normal singleplayer mode (15 levels, level increases every 60 seconds), except that 2 players try to work together. Each player has their own playfield. Your partner's playfield is flipped (rotated by 180°) and combined with your play field to create a third playfield. If the stacks of the 2 players touch each other, then it's game over. The scores of the 2 players are added to determine the rank in the leaderboard.
Deathmatch
This is the versus mode. Your goal is to top out your opponent by sending garbage lines. The garbage system is adjustable in the way, that the room creator defines how many lines must be cleared at once in order to send those lines over to the opponent (e.g. you can turn off Singles sending lines). The garbage lines have the holes at the same position as the completed lines, so more than 1 hole per line is possible (e.g. lines completed with an O piece have 2 adjacent holes). This kind of garbage, sometimes referred to as tactical garbage, is also used in Bloxeed, DuelTris, TGM2, Tetris with Cardcaptor Sakura and Tetris: New Century.
