It's a solid enough idea, seen in Tetris DS and Tetrio.io. Apparently it was the first draft of a Tetris VS mode.

In the 2-player Tetris the glass had no bottom. The pieces for the first player move from the top, for the second - from the bottom. Two players competed for the space inside.

The real issue with the concept is that it doesn't lend itself well to a lot of interaction between players. It reminds me of Lumines VS. Once a player gets going they just have so much of the field there's not much of a counterplay for the losing player. They're just sorta suffocated, slowly or quickly, and why would the winning player ever decide to screw up their side of the playing field on purpose to deter a comeback?
