False alarm: MTF will be suspended

Hey all,

Within the last week, Blue Planet Software complained to the Chrome Web Store about MTF's unauthorized use of their intellectual property, the word "Tetris". I quickly changed the name to "Minimal Tetromino Friends", but since the complaint has already been made, MTF will certainly be removed from the Chrome Web Store unless BPS explicitly asks Google not to remove it.

If it is removed, you can still install the userscript version in Chrome using Tampermonkey. Otherwise, your options would include switching to Opera or Firefox, or going without it.

The full letter (without my and the BPS contact's personal information) is posted below. I forwarded the letter to Tetris Online Support and asked them to reach out to BPS to unsuspend the extension now that it has no mention of the word "Tetris". They responded, saying they will forward the request to BPS. Still, unless something changes, you should plan on MTF being removed from the Chrome Web Store sometime on May 25, 2019.

I am the maintainer of Minimal Tetromino Friends, a browser extension
that lets players focus on doing their best job in Tetris Friends
games. Until recently, the browser extension was named "Minimal Tetris
Friends"... Over its lifetime since 2014, I have received no
complaints about it, but when I updated it recently, within 72 hours
AppDetex filed a trademark complaint on behalf of Tetris Holding for
unauthorized use of the word "Tetris".

I quickly changed all occurrences of the word "Tetris" in the browser
extension to "Tetromino" and reached out to
[mp legal name] for approval, but now, 3 days
later, I have heard nothing back, and the Chrome Web Store made it
clear that they plan to suspend the browser extension if they don't
hear from the IP owner within 5 days.

Will you please contact them so that MTF can stay up for the
tournament? The extension does not matter so much after the end of
May, but until then, virtually all of the players in the tournament
are bound to use it.

Considering that the trademark complaint was filed within 72 hours of publishing the updated browser extension, the automated AppDetex tool that filed the complaint may only search recently-updated extensions.

I'm filled with nostalgia/sadness that TF is now going. Its great that you implemented a last minute fix in time for the tournament.

I'm sad that a plugin i wrote for the tournament (live stats view of previous game, showing tspins, apm, tpm etc) wasn't used, but am glad my HD upscaler was used

I'm glad it was not taken down before the tourney ran its course. Your TF visualizing tools are very neat, I hope those codebases can be reused to some extent once TF is gone.
