FAQ

Weren't there faster players so and so years ago?

There sure were. The trouble is that we need a documented account for a formalized game of 40 lines. Tetris DX (released in 1998) happens to be one of the first games to offer a designated 40 lines mode.

Come on caffeine. Didn't you really just put in all that work just to toot your own horn?

I realize that being the one to do this looks bad. In this case, interest in Tetris history won out over the desire to retain brownie points for being humble.

Isn't it dumb to compare games that allow for different number of previews/DAS/harddrop?

I liken this to charting the progression of 100 meter sprint WRs. Rules and associations change over time. That doesn't necessarily undermine its historical significance.

Aluce

Very interesting statistics. The bump downward after the ~22 second point particularly strikes me. The record 22.51 was broken to 21.20? That's a huge gap.

I really did like this post, nice stats!
But I would like to come with some corrections:
Microblizz on his 18.43 sec WR.
He had 102 harddrops, 75 rotations, 97 moves and 11 holds, that adds up to be 285 inputs.
285 inputs / 18.43 sec = 15.46 inputs per second.

The method I was using was:
  • Get a report from NPM League by playing the replay in it
  • KPT*tetrominoes
But apparently, the KPT didn't account for holds. Thanks for catching that. I've updated the spreadsheet using your method. The exception is 20.55, of which I don't have the replay for. I deduced 20.55 from http://harddrop.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=4284.

Please let me know if anyone has the .rep files for the following games:
  • 22.90 LapSiLap
  • 22.71 LapSiLap
  • 22.63 LapSiLap
  • 20.55 MicroBlizz
  • 20.28 MicroBlizz
  • 19.90 keroco
  • 19.85 keroco
  • 19.48 keroco

Paradox

Ravendarksky

Wait we are sub 19? wtf! I've been watching these records and my brain has just been adding 19. to the start of them all.

This is insane!

Thanks for putting this together caffine, it made for a very interesting read. Sadly I'm not old skool enough to be able to give you any useful information.

The internet is the big contributing factor to discoveries?

Tetrik still had the pix, but yeah the dates are from his posts at Tetris Lovers and Tetris Taxonomy
