What's This?
テトリスフレンズ段位戦, which means "Tetris Friends Ranked Match Tournament" in English, is an active tournament hosted by a couple of volunteer Japanese tetris players. It was started as early as 2010 and now has more than 100 participants. In this thread, I will make a concise introduction to テトリスフレンズ段位戦 based on the official website of the tournament, live streams I have watched, and information that is gathered from tournament hosts and participants. Note that this thread was written on 2014/03/09, and some of the following content could be outdated in the future.

Rules
- One on one in a non-ranked 2-player room
- Fight against opponents with the same rank
- Every match goes on concurrently
- For players ranked 1~4, first to 7, win by one (no deuce)
- For players ranked 5~6, first to 10, win by one (no duece)
- Expert+ mode
- No map
- No item
- Spectating allowed (According to the official wiki page, spectating is allowed, but I once found that some players disable spectating when playing the match.
- You gain 1 point by defeating an opponent, and you lose 1 point by being defeated. When your points reach +3, you rank up, and the points become zero. When your points reach -3, you rank down, and the points become zero. (This rule applies only to players ranked 1~4; as for rank 5~6, the ranking system is undetermined.)

Live Streams
A host will make a preparation live stream (at least 30 minutes), and the next 2 hours is the time for the participants to fight.

Timeline
The tournament is usually held 3+ times every week in the evening (JST); However, due to the lack of spare time of the hosts, there is no fixed time when the tournament will be held. The best one can do is follow the news on the official websites, or subscribe to the Niconico communities of the hosts for immediate alerts. Sometimes in the live streams, the hosts will also tell the audience when the next tournament will be held.

Currently participants are ranked from one to four, and the highest rank is six. More ranks may be added in the future. 1. テトリスフレンズ月例大会 (Tetris Friends Monthly Tournament)
This a monthly tournament similar to テトリスフレンズ段位戦.
- Held on the 4th Sunday every month when a host has spare time.
- A preparation live stream starts after lunch time (usually at 13:30).
- If #Players is less than 8, round-robin is applied. First to 10.
- Else if #Players is less than 32, single elimination is applied. First to 10.
- Else if #Players is greater than or equal to 32, a preliminary contest (FT 5, time limit=15 minutes) with Swiss-system is held. After that, comes the main contest (FT 10, time limit = 30 minutes) with single elimination.
- Every match (except the final one) has a preset time limit.
- Winner gets ranked up, runner-up gets +2 points, third place gets +1 point in テトリスフレンズ段位戦.

This is an irregular quickfire tournament, where participants are assiged into random teams, with each time consisting of two players.

Thanks for the info. It's interesting to see there's more competition going on in Japan than in the rest of the world. Japan-internal tourneys have the advantage that there are no language barriers and no time zone issues.

The format behind "Tetris Friends Ranked Match Tournament" sounds similar to Swiss-system, with the difference that the tourney is ongoing and people needn't play the same number of rounds.

A question regarding the "Tetris Friends Monthly Tournament": Is it done within a few hours or do have people some days time to play their matches?

Since every match goes on concurrently, the whole tournament is done within a few hours, and usually ends before dinner time. (P.S. I just detailed the rules and added some video links of the final matches. Please have a look.)

Oh ok. Actually I haven't seen any 100-plus-player tournament held on TF except TTO; the sixth テトリスフレンズ段位戦 has quite a bit of participants, though. I know it's far from 100+ but hey.

Facts:
That was one match.
The waiting time was 23 min.
There was no streaming.
Best to 5 with no ties

My suggestions :
Tourneys usually have more than one match.
Waiting time was okay, we could extend the time to one waku, 30 minutes, for japanese players who might participate.
Stream almost every match.
