Tetris_Ernest, please don't take this personally; I've been meaning to write this rant for a while, your post just bumped the thread and reminded me.

I would just like to step in and say that 'memes' are not 'pictures with captions' in the same way that 'sandwiches' are not 'ham and cheese'.

A bit of history!

Before you can say 'facepalm', the internet has been overwhelmed with caption-picture-caption format images (advice dog -> advice animal -> ???), to the point where people have begun to define the word 'meme' by these pictures. Everyone wants to try their hand at it so they can be a part of the fad, which gives us a large quantity of mediocre or awful contributions.

Okay, so back to the original point. These pictures are not "memes". Their format is a meme of a meme which is a part of a greater internet culture. They put a meme in your meme, dawg. A meme is a catchy idea -- something like an inside joke, if "inside" were to represent the whole of the internet. Memes spread through repetition. Some reach farther than others, and last longer, but they all share one quality.

They get fucking old.

The longer a meme has been propagated, the cleverer you have to implement it for it to be funny instead of facepalm. Unfortunately what tends to happen is, the more popular a meme gets, the more it gets beaten into the ground by unfunny tryhards trying to ride the wave.

Please, guys, meme responsibly. If you absolutely must caption a picture, consider the following things:

1) Is the picture well-known enough to have established its own unique character?
2) Is the caption actually funny?
3) No really, hold yourself to a higher standard.
4) ...
5) Be really sure it's absolutely hilarious. There's a mountain of crap to overcome!
