I don't personally live in cali, so I won't be attending, but it'd be nice to see some HD presence at this thing.

Since I never really played hardcore NES Tetris I really have no idea how difficult it is to get maxed out score.  Here's a video for anyone interested

It doesn't really look difficult, but I don't have my NES anymore so I can't find out for myself.

It is pretty tough. The DAS is 10hz with 16 frame start-up, but there are some neat tricks at your disposal that are not present in other games.

Some players opt to learn the DAS well enough to play at high speeds, while others work at tapping quickly and consistently enough to circumvent learning these systems. Whichever style you choose, an NES Tetris max-out is a huge test of consistency and definitely no small feat.

I'm in California, but I'm a bit far removed from LA. I've been thinking I might attend if I have the time, money, and skills by the time the date rolls around.

it is very difficult to max out nes tetris, only a handful of players have done it (i think 2)

QuoteLike many setups here, it is useful if your opponent doesn't move and you get 4 Ts in a row.

Are you attending, Kitaru? Any hope of an internet stream? GO GO INVISIBLE NESTRIS

I might drop by to watch the event, I live around 1.5 hours away.  If I do i'll stream it (if they have wifi).

I want to participate =(, but don't have an NES to start training with.

Do you guys think getting this:

and playing on the PC would be pretty much the same thing?

I can confirm that it will work just as well. I practiced with some random Logitech controller I found at Gamestop to train certain areas on Lockjaw before I went to Hawaii, and this translated very well to using my DS. It may be to your advantage, too. For example, you may not get much use out of practicing on low levels, but by using clones, you can simulate harder levels and train more effectively. You just have to make sure you tweak the delays and rotation system correctly.

Oh man, I think you should definitely compete if you have the chance blink! I mean, It's only $10 to attempt qualifying. I'd say its worth it. Sucks though, I'll be in LA a week before the championship so i wouldn't be able to compete. I have Tetris NES but i'm not sure how good I am at it, and probably wouldn't get very far anyway.

Not that we're doing anything illegal, but if you really want to practice Blink you can just get an emulator and the rom and I guess use an xbox controller to practice. All I know about that game is if you want to play fast but risky stack up high to start with and then play with a smaller field for faster soft drops (they reach the bottom quicker due to the smaller field).

Oh you're not talking about clones. Get that controller if you really want the best practice but I'm sure an xbox controller would be just as good or whatever other kind you have.

You know what, I kinda want to drive to see this. Who's up for a Seattle-to-LA road trip (or anywhere along the way)?

Why the NES tetris?
If you read the website it says that all the classic gamers prefer this due to its difficulty. I disagree
Didn't the original gameboy come first and sell more copies?

Classic tetris world champion should mean the best in the world; no one from any other country is going to be represented. I would bet that there is a few japanese players just as good.

Who is Robin Mihara? And by what standards is he a tetris expert? I mean no personal insult. But it seems kinda fishy that someone organizes an event so he can claim the title of world best.

Its cool that you want to make a classic tetris tournament. Just a "world best" tournament is a hard claim to make, even if it is run by twin galaxies.

Edit: Someone from HD better win!!

Is the NES version a lot harder than the Game Boy version? I was sort of suprised they only picked one game for the event.

And there needs to be more East coast tetris.

It seems like all cool video game events are on the west coast.  Nothing in Chicago that's for sure.

I hope you get to practice/play blink.  I'd love to see you show up the twin galaxy peeps

I'd love for Blink to bring a modern multiplayer tetris game and actually show them some real multiplayer ability. Look I can hard drop and play super fast.
