QuoteLike many setups here, it is useful if your opponent doesn't move and you get 4 Ts in a row.

I wonder if the Japanese ever even played NES Tetris.  Famicom Tetris was a totally different game that in some respects reminds me more of Tengen/Atari Tetris, although the play control is the strangest setup I've ever seen on a Tetris game.

a few questions:

Does the original NES controller have 8way input or just 4way?

Is there a weird scoring system on NES tetris?  like.... you need to mainly do Tetrises because of some line clear limit before the game is over?  Or can you max out with all singles if you wanted to.

Why the NES tetris?
If you read the website it says that all the classic gamers prefer this due to its difficulty. I disagree
Didn't the original gameboy come first and sell more copies?
Frankly, the GameBoy version is bland and has bad mechanics. The NES one definitely has some aspects that make it a more interesting game, and you can see some clear indication in the way things work that the developers spent some time on it and cared about the player and the way the game was going to be played.

Classic tetris world champion should mean the best in the world; no one from any other country is going to be represented. I would bet that there is a few japanese players just as good.
NES Tetris was not released in Japan. The classic game that hardcore players followed in Japan is Sega Tetris, which doesn't play similarly at all. I doubt there are many passionate NES players over there.

Who is Robin Mihara? And by what standards is he a tetris expert? I mean no personal insult. But it seems kinda fishy that someone organizes an event so he can claim the title of world best.
He placed third in the 1990 Nintendo World Championships.

Edit: Someone from HD better win!!
SuPa used to hang out here. As one of the few to have maxed out, he's your best bet.

I'd love for Blink to bring a modern multiplayer tetris game and actually show them some real multiplayer ability. Look I can hard drop and play super fast.
ITT people missing the point. :P

8-way, but NES Tetris is a 4-way game. Diagonal drops were added in the SNES remake for Tetris + Dr. Mario.

Tetrises are necessary. The base scoring is 40/100/300/1200, and the multiplier is level+1.

Thanks, I'm 95% sure I'll attend this event.  Kitaru will you be there?

I just ordered this controller: http://www.amazon.com/NES-Controller-USB-A...0522&sr=8-2
hopefully can start training next week so I don't embarrass myself at the event.

Kitaru

Given the time, money, and skill necessary, I may make plans to attend.

how do you start on a level higher than 9?

I just got my NES controller in the mail!  training will start today!  never played this game before today.

Hold down A when you select a level.

"Who is Robin Mihara? And by what standards is he a tetris expert? I mean no personal insult. But it seems kinda fishy that someone organizes an event so he can claim the title of world best. "

 Greetings!

That's a good question.  I am Robin and I guess one could argue I am not technically an expert.  I did place 3rd nationally in the 1990 NWC (which was basically the 1st Tetris tournament) with only 3-4 months experience.
One might also say that I have put a ton of serious thought in to piece placement and the odds you lay yourself (for the following piece) with each decision.

Long gone are those days though, and only recently has the NWC poked it's head up back from my glory years.  This movie/contest is something that is long overdue in my opinion, and I understand (especially with new-school players) that it will bring about some controversy.  Keep in mind that words like "expert" and "world championship" aren't always literal.  You have to admit it sounds a heck of a lot better than "Man who finished 3rd in a Nintendo contest 20 years ago"
Anyway, hello everyone.  With several Tetris forums around I am not sure which to join/chat at.  This one seems nice.  I recognize some of your names already.

Oh, and I'm not competing in my contest.

And people would be correct.
Not compared to the top few guys.  I have wayy to many children to practice like I would need to.  Plus, as was stated, it would look fishy if I was in there.

Hi Robin, just wanted to say welcome to Hard Drop.

I have a few questions about your tournament:

will there be a flat surface or anything we can lay the controller on or will we be playing while sitting on the floor?

Is it a carpet floor or wood/tile?

Hello there!  I am honored to speak to what I believe (I'm out of the loop nowadays) to be a top current player in the world.  I saw some battles you had on youtube and was quite impressed.  I also think you have the second best Tetris name I've seen (1st being a guy called quicksand from Blockles).

I think it will be TVs on rolling carts, so I can't guarantee a flat surface.  I am very open to you bringing something (narrow fold out table) to place your controller on (I assume it is for hyper-tapping).  Here is a shot of the place you would be playing
http://www.downtownindependent.com/photo/a...?context=latest
should you make the top 8 (you would have to qualify in 3-minute play starting at level 9)

I cannot see if that is carpet or maybe a mat.  We are also considering making a wooden stage if the players sit too low.

By the way, to correct a previous statement.  We are not "sponsored" by Twin Galaxies.  They are simply sending a representative to be present.  We are in the works of being sponsored by BluePlanet.... and close to getting Mr. Pajitnov to attend

massi4h

Hey Robin do you play any newer tetris games? I really think the skill nowadays is in the multiplayer aspect rather than single player scores.

Cool that you're organising something for the old-school players though.
