It just makes more sense to have them on the side since your vision is near the bottom more often than the top, so having them all at the top makes it that much more difficult to keep them in your peripheral vision.

optimally it the previews should be all IN The playfield  then their not in ur peripherla vision  i think LJ has an implementation of this.

doesn't blockbox do this already with one next piece?

I'm used to them at the top, it throws me off to find them on the side.  I actually feel like I need to move my eyes to see them.
