Aside from the crap surrounding the quality and diversity of the games, I personally reckon that the main issue with HD at the minute is the lack of strong competition. No BM or rivalry required, just a lack of healthy good-natured tournaments. I mean, why bother getting good if you can't win (or at least place high) in stuff? Part of the issue, I believe, is that tournaments have a long delay between sign-ups and the actual start of the event, giving time for people to lose interest or suddenly discover they have no free time.
I've recently become quite enamoured with
z33k, a website that runs fairly small tournaments for SC2, in particular with restrictions to give tournaments for lower-level players only, meaning even crap people such as myself can get competitive. But aside from that these tournaments also hold the advantage of being single-night events, that are held on a regular basis. I propose doing the same sort of thing here.
To start with, the basic format will be the same: games will be single-elimination Bo19 (First to 10 wins), with the Nullpo TOJ format. Further down the line I might start introducing different elements to spice it up a bit and keep things interesting. I will make a post at some point near the end of the week, most likely Thursday or Friday, confirming the game type and any restriction that might be in place (the first few will definitely just be Open).
People can express interest and try and try to drum up a bit of interest from other players once the announcement is made, but there is no commitment implied whatsoever by posting said interest in the thread (I declare this tournament exempt from the competitor black list). Actual registration for the event will be by simply turning up to play on Nullpomino and registering in the chat there around 15-30 minutes before the event is due to start. No commitment required in advance, no organisation to arrange matches with opponents needed. People who want to play show up, the bracket gets made, and we all play Nullpo for an hour or so and a tournament is done. Easy.
Currently the time I have in mind is 1pm PST (10pm CET). This places it at early to mid afternoon for the US, and in the evening for Europe, which is then only time I can see being generally convenient for everyone. These tournaments would be on Saturdays or Sundays, with me leaning towards Saturday at the moment.
This post is intended to serve two purposes. The first is to see if there's a strong general preference for either Saturday or Sunday, to push it towards one of the two days. I don't think there will be, but I could be wrong. The second is to see if there is actual genuine interest in this sort of thing. I'm honestly not too bothered about numbers being particularly high - so long as there's more than four or five each week I'll be happy to keep it up, but I'd at least like to know that not everyone thinks it's a stupid and pointless idea.
