I highly doubt I'd be able to make this anyway, but out of curiosity how is the head-to-head going to go? First to KO or most lines within a time limit? When we did Denver Tetris League way back they had a First to KO or most lines in 3 Minutes so that's why I ask? I may have to start practicing ha ha if there is a time limit there are so many more strategies, which is why I'm curious.

The head-to-head part is normal A-type vs mode, first to 3.

Re: Qualifying:

I've been told the rules are set in stone. I didn't have the opportunity to negotiate them. I'm interested in what you guys have to say, but please note that I won't be able to do anything about it this year.

For the sake of discussion, my proposal was going to be actual vs games. I don't see the point in playing a single player B-type mode to seed a multiplayer A-type tournament. I think it would be decent to simply rank participants with Elo and let them churn through the seats all day. This would let us run twice as many qualifying matches, and the qualifiers would be testing the same skill that they're going to be competing in. What do you guys think?

the nice thing about tetris though is that even though a lot of folks might get perfects, more proficient players still tend to get near the top of the list one way or another. I wonder if SNES shares the NES bug where if you push down from the tippy top you actually get a bit less in push down bonus than if you start from about 2/3rds of the way up? But I better not give away my strategy Wink.png or am I misleading you all now mhua ha hah ahahaha

Starting Level is 0 (lowest gravity), isn't it?

Using Versus would be too complicated. I think B-Type is best mode for qualifying. It's just that Level 9 isn't that fast. So, it's not that hard to get 6 Tetrises there (if you know how to skim).

Don't confuse complexity on the part of the player (stand in line and play games, try to win) with complexity on the part of the organizer (write a few lines of PHP code and it's not so complex anymore)

I'd definitely tend to agree with this. Some players are much better at a B-Type game than head-to-head. Allowing the B-Type to potentially knock out some of the best VS contenders before they'd even be able to play VS just seems like a bad idea in general to me. It be like having a basketball tourney and deciding who makes it on games of Horse. Now sure you'll most likely get some of the best players, but you're also more than likely going to lose out on some of them as well.

I neglected to mention that the bracket matches will be played on level 9.

Bump

As indicated I had prefered starting on level 0.

The reason: Level 9 gives advantages to the faster player. The 2 players get the same piece sequence and randomizer is (pretty much) memoryless. It's no rarity that you have to wait long for a line piece but then get a bunch of them. If you can perform 3 Tetrises before the opponent receives the line pieces, this will top out your opponent, as on level 9 more empty rows are needed on top to navigate the active piece.

Last call for volunteers: anyone available?

Here are my predictions. I hardly know anybody from that list though.

IPB Image

Best match of first round is Chris Brady vs Dana Wilcox. I went for an outsider tip, namely Dana.

On second round we have Bo Steil vs Ben Mullen (I chose Ben), Joshua Tolles vs Robin Mihara (I chose Joshua), Quaid vs. Matt Buco (I chose Quaid) and Trey Harrison vs David Vulich (I chose David).
.
"Poor grandmaster baby" Alex Kerr didn't qualify well and must play against Harry Hong. Harry Hong will take revenge for last years. The other matches seem to be close, too, except that match involving Jonas Neubauer.

I predict Jonas vs Harry (resp. Alex) as final. Jonas leaves the tourney as unbeaten 4 times crowned champion.

So Kitaru won the SNES tourney. I still don't know the full results. 16 people got 7 Tetrises in the qualifications, that's more than I expected. Luckily the 17th place "only" got 6 Tetrises - it would have been tough to leave somebody out who had performed so well in qualifying.

NES qualifications: http://tetrischampionship.com/scoreboard.html
NES results: http://challonge.com/CWTC_2013
NES stream: http://www.twitch.tv/harddrop/b/467999445
(quarter finals start at 0:04:00, semi finals at 1:03:00 and final at 1:37:00)

The first rounds of NES Tetris were streamed too, but I won't link it. There was also an audio & cam stream for the later rounds, but it looks like it wasn't saved.
