The reason for this is pretty clear, people have a browser open all the time, and leaving one tab open for HD is no hassle at all, having an extra application open that produces 2 windows and has a pretty inconvinient chat-system atm, not so much.
I'm not implying the shoutbox would be much better in that regard (chatting-possibilities), it is for sure easier to access tho - and so is the new page with the room overview, it can only give more incentive for people to play.
I'm not sure where you get this idea from that you could force people nowadays to hang out in some game lobby, when so much has moved already to the browser (even google saw this now and
canceled some of their products like Desktop, a few days ago). This is not 15 years ago, where being on the internet or online in general was something special and you actually try to be focused in what you do every minute of it, because it costs alot of money.
To make this post a bit more Nullpo related: compared to other games or older games (tnet, etc), why do we have so little people idling? our userbase structure changed, to more people either not being really passionate about tetris or just not having the time for it as they maybe would want and in general it is ofc just alot smaller than for almost any other online game out there. On average our "users-online" number for the amount of total users we have on nullpo (more than once) is not too bad. (I'd actually be interested in making a statistic on this figure once.)
