Forums - Hard Drop - Tetris Community _ Announcements _ Redesign sneak peek and planned upcoming features

Posted by: Blink Mar 7 2013, 06:28 PM

My brother hasn't worked on the site much (and none in the past 2 months), but his schedule is going to free up in April so we should see some real progress then. Here's a little preview of how things look right now, he hasn't spent much time on it yet.

http://i49.tinypic.com/25u44zo.jpg

As you can see there's going to be a shift towards more attention to streaming.

Not limited to only appearance and layout, there is a plan to update the current forum software to something more modern with more features like rating of posts. Not sure when that will be completed though, it takes a lot of work to move all the data over.

Also I have something interesting in mind that should help new members and players trying to get strategy/techniques/t-spin knowledge that I feel will be a good companion tool to go alongside the wiki.

So yep, there's a lot of improvements planned for HD in 2013 Grin.png

one question that I need to know is where would the forums will be on the new format because I don't see it at all?

Posted by: FelipeMayrink Mar 7 2013, 06:33 PM

Damn, looks awesome.

But please tell me you're not gonna get rid of the "Records" tab. =(

We won't, in fact that's something I want improved and made more useful/prominent as well. It's removed in the screenshot because my brother and I agreed to do away with the current buggy records page in place for a better one down the line.

The forum software change comes after the initial redesign pizza, you won't be able to see it right now because it doesn't exist yet.

Very nice!
In this case, I approve of this 100%. Smile.png

Very nice Blink, remodel plans look amazing.

By "rating of posts" I really hope you mean a comment thumb up system! It's way too unrealistic to actually reply to a comment just to give an instant feedback :/

I agree the black color concept is a bit daunting. I really do enjoy the clean eco-friendly color scheme going on right now. If that remodel blueprint, along with this current color scheme, could be combined, I think we'd be at agreement gentlemen.

Posted by: Blink Mar 7 2013, 08:16 PM

Too dark? Hmmm, i'll mess with some color schemes.

Posted by: MarioThePhenom Mar 7 2013, 08:19 PM

im actually pretty hyped for HD 2013 now, after seeing that screenshot, ahah

Posted by: Aaron Mar 7 2013, 08:21 PM

Dark background sites (especially those based around text) universally suck.

I do like the currect scheme, but a refresh along the same lines would be nice.

And the forums should only be the second tab if the home page comes before it, since that's where the most activity takes place. I'll give a more in-depth critique when I can see it on my computer, though.

Posted by: PolarisTR Mar 7 2013, 08:52 PM

Looks really nice Blink. Not a big fan of the color scheme though. Best thing has to be the top bar. Looks amazing!!
Love the idea of the rating system to Grin.png

For the forums, maybe a change in buttons (Quote, reply etc.) to something a bit higher quality.

Aaron pretty much said it all. Nice point on the forum thing, btw.

Like Mario said, I'm pretty hyped about this. The desing looks really great.

BLINKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK NYOOOOOOOOOOOO...

Here is my photoshop edit of your preview to show you how it can look cleaner and better (Imo)

1. Background objects are darker than focus objects.
2. Extra padding to seperate things and make it look not squished.
3. Lining up of elements so that it doesn't break that ... visual structure. (eg. the nav/menu/header)
4. Less blocks = less confusion and messiness.
5. Border around the "Player of the Month" so that it appears to fit in.
( I think it needs to be a few shades lighter hmm...)

Wow rissa Grin.png, thanks for taking the time to make that image. I agree with you, it's a nice improvement. I'll show my brother and ask him to adjust things, although this is far from finalized because I'm not 100% sure about the color scheme yet.

Once again, thanks for the input.

Black is for porn. If you want to shift the focus to streaming I suggest getting the streaming act together and moving smoothly before the redesign launches. It doesn't look very redesigned at all to be honest...

Posted by: Blink Mar 8 2013, 07:04 AM

Like I mentioned in the first post, he only spent like 1 or 2 days on it total dating back to January. Give him some time to work on it in April (he won't be working on it all of March either) before noticing anything major. Changes will happen slowly over time.

I'm not TOO worried about the streaming situation, just looking to stream and have fun as we usually do except this time the streaming will be more prominent on the main page, that's about it. I'm pretty sure by the time the redesign launches (prob not till very late 2013), the situation will be improved. Not trying to turn into a professional channel or anything, so long as quality is improved and streaming is more consistent than now.

nice mod support we have going on here

what's wrong with the current streaming action we're getting?

and iono what you're looking at.. it looks redesigned to a certain degree. i mean dat black.

personally i liked the grey tones better - reason being it looks more like a hardcore gamer site than other run of the mill forums..not sure what everyone has against it D: [n that's kinda bothering me cause i'm a color person D:]
i agree about the lining of things but i'm sure that's only cause blink's brother hasn't gotten to aligning everything properly..rough drafts are rough after all~

Support != unconditional agreement

Blink answered my stream comment - I thought that's what he was talking about.

It looks redesigned in the way that you can jumble the letters in the middle of a word and still read it. I'm not complaining about it, just stating my thoughts.

And if he's working from my css rather than starting clean I feel REALLY bad for him. I know so much more now, if he wants to keep the design with the content blocks and responsive interface I can probably do a much better job now.

i don't see anyone else giving unconditional agreement, but you need to chill on your attitude. =_= it's a rough draft/sneak peek. no one said it was final.

and i quote you "it doesnt look very redesigned at all"
the ss does not look anything like the current hd. I didn't say you were complaining about it.. but to say that it doesnt look redesigned at all is a stretch.

that's good you know more about designing websites now Sticking Out Tongue.png Blink's brother does it as a job. kthankx.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

@qwerty098765: Good point on the offset of the top navigation.

Again, this is a rough draft (spent about 2 days) and it will go through many iterations before it is launched to the public. I was thinking of implementing a fluid layout so that it adjusts according to your screen resolution, that way the majority of the screen is used up instead of having a layout with huge white spaces on larger screen resolutions (white space will be consistent throughout all devices). I also don't believe we have a mobile compatible version so I'll consider that when developing HDv2.

Just a note, the CSS was not taken from the existing CSS file. Secondly, you can not claim the CSS file is yours when clearly you did not create it. Now, you may have done some minor edits to it but the site looks exactly like it did when it first launched.

I'm not claiming that the CSS is 'mine', I was referring to the portion of the CSS that I added. I had trouble with the margins/padding to make everything line up, which is why I thought maybe you had inherited them. You are welcome to use it if you like, I was simply volunteering to clean it up if you wanted to make use of it.

If you haven't already, watch what happens when the HD mainpage gets narrowed, there's 2 stages. I didn't complete the menu transition for mobile yet (li -> select). Anyway, this is what I meant by responsive, and it helps the site out on mobile too.

I do think a site can be too wide; it can be hard to follow all the text across, so I favor the current layout over fluid. I suppose it'll depend on how the space gets used, of course.

Fair enough, it did sounded like you were saying the CSS was yours, so thanks for clarifying. Fluid layouts will definitely have cons just as fixed layouts will. In the end, we will have to decide which is best for the community, when time permits, I will break it down for the community on the pros and cons for each one.

Posted by: qwerty098765 Mar 8 2013, 11:36 PM

Bear in mind the two main things that occur on this site is:
1. Reading
2. Watching vids...

So we wouldn't want a site that becomes too wide.

Layout reminds me of myspace.

Glad to see the site being updated. This is a great site that suffers a bit in the design department right now. I personally don't like the dark design. Take a look at most of the big sites out there, none of them are dark, Facebook, Google, YouTube, Wikipedia, etc. I do like dark elements though, keeping a site totally light isn't good either. Having dark and light elements contrast done well is hard, but it pays off.

I don't like that everything is in a box of its own. It's something I see a lot from amateur designers (I am an amateur myself), and while it can be nice, it's just a quick way to make something decent. It's passable, but I think more time should be spent laying out the elements and tying them together. It currently has a very cluttered look, don't be afraid to add in some 'white space' (that is empty space around objects). This relaxes the site and makes it much more pleasant to read. I also think some of the elements could be dropped, like recently logged in. Don't forget about the typography of the site either. Good typography will greatly improve any site.

I love the icons in the top navigation, but I think that the size should be increased a bit, and some white space added in.

I agree that the site should have mobile features implemented. I applaud myndzi for making the front page responsive, and using buzz words Grin.png, but the rest of the site is sadly not mobile. I know there are some forum software that do have mobile versions included, which might be worth looking at when doing the upgrade.

Another consideration is having the page load fast, and using all the current techniques to improve the speed. Currently the site scores 73/100 on https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights#url=harddrop.com&mobile=false. This isn't the only way to improve site speed, but it's a good place to start.

I understand that making a site of this magnitude is a great deal of work, and this might not be your full time jobs. But putting the work in little by little will definitely improve the site.

In regards to the light/dark color schemes:
Why not both? Have a toggle in the corner or somewhere on the screen and everyone can be happy. While you're at it, make it so individuals can create their own color schemes and share with others/add to the toggle!
Too much? xD The cap has to be somewhere in terms of customization.

Posted by: PolarisTR Mar 12 2013, 12:36 AM

I was going to suggest this, but I really doubt that they would do something like that. Would be nice though, customization is everything nowadays.

This is still being worked on, very slowly though. The front page and parts of other areas of the website are done but still a long ways to go.

Also I know that the maps aren't working right now, the Google Maps API v2 is deprecated so once we update the code to use Maps API v3 it'll be okay again.
