A belated thread. PPT stands for Puyo Puyo Tetris. This competition has an own channel on the HardDrop Discord server, so I think it deserves a forum thread, too. Note that this competition is already running; you can't join anymore. Link to the
brackets. Link to the
recorded videos.
Japanese Tetris League is a series of competitions (sometimes also called Dannisen), each time held on a different platform. Every participant must have a stream and Twitter account. At first, players are divided into classes depending on their skill levels. Then, each player will play against every other player from the same class (round robin).
2 and a half years ago, there was one competition on the Japanese PS4 version of Puyo Puyo Tetris (
HD thread),
amemiya taiyou won the highest class, hebo_mai got 2nd place. amemiya became the dominating Puyo Puyo Tetris player afterwards.
Relatively shortly before Tetris Tournament Online IV there was a competition on Tetris Friends.
Yuimetal (Gorone) won that (in the highest class) and
TTO4 afterwards.
Relatively shortly before Tetris Tournament Online V there was
another competition on Tetris Friends.
ajanba won that (in the highest class) and
TTO5 afterwards.
So, those tournaments are relatively meaningful although the English speaking community doesn't care most of the time. But this time it cares. It's basically the
first sole Tetris tournament on the PC version of Puyo Puyo Tetris. A lot of non-Japanese players have joined.
This time, each participant had to play against the tournament host aruni084 to decide in which class to play later on. Each match is first to 15 points. Players who managed to beat aruni084 or who scored at least 10 points against him went to the top class ("A class"). Only 5 players did so. Players who scored between 3 and 9 points went to B class, and players who scored 2 points or less went to C class.
In
A class we have
Wumbo (Squirtle) as well as the Japanese players
amemiya,
ajanba,
ali-m (kazu) and
sakana. Not sure who the latter is but the other Japanese players should be well known by now. As said before, amemiya is the domininating PPT player, he beat hebo_mai on many occasions (Tetris League, Red Bull 5G, Nintendo Switch presentation). ajanba has participated in some Tetris Tournament Onlines and won TTO5, HDO9 and TF comeback tournament (against
Squirtle). ali-m was often seen in Blink and amemiya streams and he is also on the HD Discord.
In
B class we have OnePunMan, Blink, z2sam, PokeDialga, ZeroT and a bunch of Japanese players (e.g. Samaf and whipemerald). In
C class we have Yoshi100_Aus, abcdqd (crzy242), 888 (Alexandra), pwn, qmk, Reddyeen and one Japanese player.
It's pretty safe to say that a Japanese player will win A class (Wumbo lost pretty high against amemiya) and that a non-Japanese player will win C class (how come that qmk and crzy are in that class?). It will be most interesting to see which region will be on top in B class.
The competition is already running since a few weeks, so some matches have already been played. The corresponding VODs / videos can be found on
this page. Here's a pretty close match in A class.
ali-m vs ajanba, match starts at 9 minutes.
