The concept
It has been 2 months in the making, with dozens of e-mails, draft systems, and considerations sent between myndzi and me, but finally the concept is ready to bring out.
I present to you, Tetris Belts. Just like in Karate, a player who has played for maybe half a year may be able to get White, but only expert players and seasoned veterans who are masters of modern SRS play will be able to call themselves “Black belt players”.
Like in Karate, you will only be able to move on to the next belt after completing the last belt. The belt rankings will be thus: White, Yellow, Orange, Green, Blue, Brown, Black. I will put a list of rankings on the OP to reward players for their hard work in getting a belt (and it will be hard work, since you’ll need to master your weaknesses to get each belt, especially at the advanced levels.)
What am I going to have to master?
Many elements of modern SRS gameplay: sustained speed, downstacking, spins and setups.
How can I enter this?
It will work by live testing - pm me and we'll find a time that's good for both of us. Games will be played on NullpoMino, and only NullpoMino.
If you would like to enter, please pm or post on the thread with a good time for you to make. If you post a time, please make sure you can make it. You will only be allowed to schedule or reschedule a new time with three days’ notice or more, i.e. Wednesday for arranging a Saturday, Thursday for arranging a Sunday. You may also turn up on the day, but only in one of the slots already scheduled. It is at the examiner's discretion to test you at any other time. If the examiner cannot do it and cancels with less than 3 days' notice, then you have two options: When you see an examiner free during the next week/month, you can be tested impromptu at your discretion. Otherwise, you can take two tests on the next week/month's round.
How can I become an examiner?
Please pm me if you’d like to be an examiner. All it requires is a little of the time on the weekend which you’d usually put towards playing tetris to help examine each player. You will need to time attempts, count spins, and, for perfect clear tests, to analyse the piece sequence to see if a perfect clear would have been possible for that sequence. I would appreciate anyone who would be able to volunteer. Being an examiner doesn’t stop you from taking the test, but examiners cannot test themselves.
Current Examiners:
Paul676
Myndzi
jkwon23
Ravendarksky
Magnanimous
Darthduck
What to post and what not to post in this thread:
If you would like to enter, please pm or post on the thread with a good time for you to make. If you post a time, please make sure you can make it. You will only be allowed to schedule or reschedule a new time with three days’ notice or more, (coming into effect from week 2), i.e.
Please do not post if you have a problem with how the belt system works, or what I have included and not included. I will be asking the moderators to delete all such comments if they come. If you have a problem, or something you would like to discuss, please pm me, and I will happily explain why I left out what you were hoping to have put into the test, or vice versa. This has been discussed between myndzi and I extremely in-depth, and then tested to the people on harddrop forums. If something has been put in or left out, it has not been done so without thought. If someone does post with their own problem with this sytem, please do not answer them. I will have done so by pm. Please also do not post anything irrelevant to the Tetris Belts procedure or system. It clogs up the thread with unnecessary comments, and makes the necessary ones harder to track down.
The process of testing:
Testing should be good fun and relaxed, but there are a few things you need to know.
You MUST wait for the examiner to say they are ready for each run before you start. Otherwise they may and will make you restart the run they are not ready for.
If you're disrespectful to an examiner (not that this would foreseeably happen), they have the right to fail you on that.
Information and settings
For the spin challenges use immobile spin detection. EZ spins are not allowed. Unless specified ALL spins count (e.g. Singles, Doubles, Triples). Spins MUST clear at least one line though!
In combo challenges as part of the setups test: You are allowed any residue at the bottom of the well. However, another listed setup at the bottom of a well will not count towards the combo if you do the setup and then the listed combo in combo. Horizontal I skimming is ok, but you must otherwise reach your target combo number within the N-wide well. So for a 2-wide combo, you'd have to reach 6-combo before "breaking out" of the 2-wide column, with the exception of I skims. Same with 3-wide. For the funnel combo, this doesn't matter.
In the spin part of the test: Static setups are not allowed: e.g. ST stacking to get 100 spins in 5 minutes. All spins must be part of a fluid stacking motion. You are allowed multi-piece setups, for example imperial cross to gain 2 t-spins, but the examiner must use his discretion on whether the player is using setups as part of on the fly fluid play, or just using them as static setups to get their way round a spin challenge. For example, using the May three times in a minute to get the Green spins test done would not be classed as on the fly fluid play.
For the setups you are allowed to set one up whilst you are performing the last one. i.e the following is valid:
I was a little confused by some of the above. So I'm including a non GoogleDocs description of things here. Hopefully I've picked it all up right. This probably serves as a useful check anyway, because if I don't understand it then probably others won't either!
1 - For The spin challenges use immobile spin detection and EZ spins are allowed. Unless specified ALL spins count (eg. EZ spins, Singles, Doubles, Triples). Spins MUST clear at least one line though!
2 - B2B TSD means A Tspin double followed by another Tspin double. Similarly B2B Tetris means two tetris in a row... etc. You can't do a Tspin mini single then a ZST for example.
3 - For the setups you are allowed to setup one and then perform a different one. Ie the following is valid:
Maybe this is obvious to smarter people than me =D
4 - When playing ULTRA mode, make sure to set Spin Bonus: All, EZ Spin: On, Spin Type: Immobile, EZImmobile: on, B2B: On, Combo: On
5 - Certain types of 180 spins are NOT acceptable in this. Here is an example:
If this were my thing I'd not be allowing any 180 spins =D
Spin Guide:
i love this idea. could you provide fumen or wiki link for all required setups?
If EZ spins are counted then I missed that part. The decision is up to Paul, but I'll define EZ spins in Nullpomino Immobile detection for you all:
EZ spin is a kick line clear that is not immobile.
EZ spins send no attack, but they do enable back-to-back in VS.
EZ spins are announced, and that's pretty much the only way you can tell in some cases whether the piece kicked or not. Knowing your natural rotations, especially with regards to S and Z, can help here.
Protip: Immobile setting is in the room settings, not the rule settings
i'd like to do this; is 3pm [edit: GMT] Saturday okay? i'm free for that whole afternoon/evening (same Sunday) so if a different time is preferable, I can probably take that instead
Is 7pm GMT Saturday good for you?
yep, that's fine
Cool, I'll be the examiner then
would this count as multiple setups?
EG it is a DT+C-spin+IC+tst? or some such nonsense like that
thanks for the reply. last question: are you allowed to take setups that are intended for only T's with other spins? such as a trinity with T-Z-J or a STSD with L-T
Yep, that's fine. Likewise, May can be done with other spins too. Only if I specify a spin (e.g. Stacked TSD --> Tetris) do you have to do that specific spin.
I think that perfectclear's fumen would count as a DT Cannon and an Imperial cross but not a C-spin - because the C-spin was never completely set up, but the Imperial Cross was. The provision about not being required to knock down the setup completely is more of a nod to the fact that you don't always get the right pieces, and knowing how and when to abort is more skillful than destroying your stack to get two T-spins. It's not intended as an "out" to shortcut/cheat the requirements of setting up the spins, though I suppose there's no help for that.
the c spin is finally accepted fully on frames 14 and 17 of that fumen. there has to be that one spot filled in to accept the tsd though- do broken apart setups like that (where you accept one bit of it, finish the stack, and accept the other spin) count?
Good point: I didn't check where the setups came in.
perfectclear: for the sake of sanity and the fact that players aren't in this to prolong the test, I would judge that a setup is complete if and only if the entire thing is built with no other intervening setups. That means that you wouldn't build most of a C-spin, take 10 other clears, and then get a TSD that is in the "same place" as the C-spin and call it a C-spin. The goal is to show that you can produce by-the-book setups, not that you can be super creative with their knockdown.
As stated previously, the intent is to not screw you over if you get bad pieces--but you still have to build the shape. I think you're overthinking it a little - this isn't a puzzle to solve, just a demonstration of knowledge
(And to head off the followup to this: Paul: I think we should stipulate that the setup must be knocked down one way or another. Every line that participates in it should be cleared. In this way, we don't have people trying to shortcut the system by restarting early, etc.)
Yes, I agree with you on that, myndzi. The setup must be cleared for it to count. No other setups can be cleared in the intervening period, but they may be set up (like in Ravendarksky's example).
I forgot to also mention: certain setups, such as TKI 3, aren't built all at once, though sometimes they can be built out ahead of taking a spin. In these cases, you would need to perform the steps in sequence and would not have the opportunity to abort the first spins.
Urgh I just fumed a runthrough of the orange belt setups challenge and then my web browser went back a page and lost everything
Instead here is a run-through of what is possible for even a slower player like myself:
I have a replay file too if anyone is interested.
The idea of this post is to make sure people aren't put off by the seeming difficulty of some of these things! With a little training you WILL do it =D
Congratulations to DrPete, mippo, Paradox, goldenshadow, Shahil619, cedevita, Aaron, Paul676, Pikiwedia, Wojtek, myndzi, and xenoslash, who have all gained a White Belt!
Scheduling slots for testing next weekend (27th and 28th) is open from now until Wednesday (for Saturday) and Thursday (for Sunday). I repeat that you will not be guaranteed to be tested if you do not schedule a slot.
You can do the 180 spin t-spins, so long as they follow the rules in the fumen - i.e. weak kicks are ok, strong kicks are not. What I meant by ANY t-spins is you're allowed t-spin singles and triples as well as doubles. In White, you were only allowed t-spin doubles in the Spins section.
Illustrates 180s allowed and not allowed for this.
It is a 3/5 attempts thing, as all setup tests except for Black are. In each attempt, you have to do each of the two instructions once, in whichever order you'd like, and you have 3 games (i.e. 2 restarts) to do it in. I ought to be clear that a mid-attempt restart, which is what I'm referring to by "maximum of 3 games" neither restarts the time nor the setups you have to do. It just clears the field. This is why the examiners must externally time each attempt, so that restarts do not lose the time.
I've clarified these things on the OP.
i'd like to sign up for a Saturday slot. I'm in Eastern time and can do it noonish till 5pm. so any slot in that range i'd like to sign up for.
2pm ok? I reckon I can do then
2pm eastern
nicely worked out system you got there
I'll be on and off all weekend; catch me on IRC if you want to get tested, or PM me on the site here.
Anyone who wants help configuring their custom rule file for the mild kicks, let me know too
WOO YELLOW BELT!
Extra details on May:
Note: Many of these are minis, and mini singles don't send on Nullpomino, mitigating the usefulness of this setup. They do enable B2B though. Hopefully future versions of Nullpomino in Allspins will reward mini singles
vvvv With all of one line.
Man, It's going to take a lot of patience to watch people take the Black belt test
Congratulations to Shahil619, Paul676, DrPete, myndzi, Aaron, Pikiwedia, goldenshadow, freakwithfire55 and Paradox who gained Yellow belt and to xlro, Profane, CaptainPaul and ZeroT who gained White Belt this week!
Please schedule now for next weekend's testing session!
I'd like to test for the white belt this weekend. I suspect Aaron will be my examiner due to ease of contact; should I work out a schedule with him privately, or on here? I'm not entirely sure which hour of Saturday I can do yet.
.
I'll mostly only be available Sunday and possibly Saturday night next weekend - though I can arrange to be around if necessary for other times. Drop me a PM if you are having trouble scheduling and I'll see what I can do.
Larry: May as well contact him privately, since you two are in the same/similar timezones - please let me know whether you managed to get White once you've finished the test
by "Stacked TSD + Tetris, " are you meaning an st stack? or just tspins and tetrises?
Congratulations to myndzi and I who got Orange Belt this weekend, and CaptainPaul who got Yellow Belt.
I wasn't here much this weekend because I had things to get on with, so it's really crucial that for all belt sessions you arrange at least 3 days before the test. If you do that, I can ask any tester whether they are available, and so you are far more likely to get a test done.
can anyone test me in the next 9 hours?
The next testing session is this weekend - if you let us know what day and time is best for you, I will be able to test you myself or get someone to test you.
I'm already a blackbelt in downstack and oldschool multiplayer but yeah I'll let you know.
Cheers, thanks
Tonight is the first night of Belt Tests. Please let me know if you would like to be tested, either now or later, and I'll try to fit you in. Your best bet will be tonight, but if a tester (myndzi, magnanimous, ravendarksky) other than me is there, then please ask them to be tested.
After this, there is a 2 week break from tests, taking place on the 24th and 25th September.
Testing for this weekend has officially started!
Paul deserves major props for his commitment to this AND his patience. He found me in a random TF room and then waiting while I closed the Nullpo window 15times trying to change modes because I don't know what I was doing.
I tried Sprint with 0 DAS (disaster) and digging mode with insane gravity (also disastrous) because my defaults were off. Then after setting gravity to zero he had to wait about 15 seconds for each of my tspins since I didn't have an override soft drop command.
He never made fun of me even though I deserved it very badly.
Congratulations this week to Wojtek for getting Yellow Belt, and NoManual, Cubixcreature, DarthDuck and ManOfMiracles for getting White Belt!
Next testing session is in 2 weeks' time, on the 24th and 25th September. I will be on holiday in Spain at this time, and so I won't be able to test anyone. Please volunteer to become a tester either by a reply to this thread or by posting a pm to me. It involves barely any commitment except helping the player know what spins or setups they have left, and guiding them through the procedure of testing. I really need your help on this guys, so please volunteer if you have time on the weekend which you can devote.
bump, I really do need your help
I could handle conducting a white belt test. I spent a lot of time on Nullpo's netplay the last few days and finally feel comfortable with it.
I also am ready for my yellow belt test but will just wait for you to get back next month since it's going to be ages before I will qualify for orange, heh.
edit: I'm sure someone has suggested this already but it would be fun if the belts would show up under our avatars.
Thanks DarthDuck, I'll put you on the testers list. Yellow isn't too hard to test either, it's on orange it gets a little harder. I designed all the tests to be as easy as possible to examine on, so don't be intimidated
Sadly Blink doesn't allow that kinda thing on the site. I have e-mailed him about it. I also e-mailed him about a similar idea, but he hasn't replied to that one yet. I sent it about 3 weeks ago.
The best you can do is put it as your signature by copying the image and pasting it to your signature, but that's obviously open to other people doing the same thing with belts they haven't got. The only consolation is that no-one would care enough to bother putting a sig of a belt they haven't got.
No problem
It would only be myndzi who'd need green belt testing, and I'm sure Ravendarksky or Magna would be happy judging a TKI3.
The fumens of all the setups in question are on the OP as well. Oddly I couldn't find in the wiki a fumen of the "straight" TKI3
I will be around all weekend if anyone wants me to conduct a belt test in Paul's absence. Just PM me. You can try to reach me in the shoutbox but I tend to get lag if I leave a window open for that with Tetrisfriends and Pandora on. Either way don't be shy and I should be able to get back to you within the hour if you try to reach me.
If anyone wants me to test them drop me an email or PM and I'll get back to you as soon as i'm online.
ravendarksky(at)gmail.com
grats to Shuey for easily getting his white belt
Thanks DD
I think we should update the belt images. I've uploaded images https://picasaweb.google.com/112608507680147389216/MiscellaneousStuff. There's two different types. See which set you like best, and if you guys like them, maybe someone can download them and re-upload them to whichever server is storing the current images?
awesome, cheers for keeping it going! I'm happy to change the images if you'd like - I'm ambivalent about the current ones, inasmuch as they're not great but fulfil the purpose
Testing is in 3 days
Ah man, I've been meaning to ask you about this thing. I think once a month is pretty off the radar! I'm glad people are still working at it!
I had such a busy weekend, I totally forgot about my next belt test!
Once I finish these exams I might bring it down to once a week. Maybe before and after nullpo weeklies. I'll have to talk to rosti about that at some point.
Not exactly sure... what is the procedure for signing up for a test?
Thank you, I missed that.
I suppose that I can't arrange a time, then, since there aren't three days, so I'll just be around on the days of and maybe get a test if someone's free.
If you're on now I can run a test?
Congratulations today go to Ravendarksky and Agamemnon for gaining Yellow Belt, and Thelas and Kully for gaining White Belt.
Commiserations to Paul for not passing his Green belt exam!
Practice hard folks if you want to take it... it's not as easy as you'd think ;-)
So guys, I commissioned joeybeans to draw my sig pic. There are seven generic people or you can ask her if you want a custom head [offer only good as long as she feels like it!] for your guy. Contact me if you would like me to make a sig version with your belt color highlighted for you to use.
oh cheers Joey! They look awesome!
Congratulations to Antifate who has earnt White Belt!
i'd go for orange but i don't get how i'm supposed to do all the set ups with only 2 restarts
I did em in zero... just play around, you'll find good ways to segue. Maybe one restart, I forget.
Eehee thank you Paul! I'm considering doing white belt as well...mmm...
any time which is good for you is good for me
Congratulations go to crzy242 and MaceFx who have gained White Belt, caffeine and Ravendarksky who has gained Orange Belt, and Paul676 who has gained Green Belt!
Aaron, test me >_>
Sorry for takin' so long. The full-res dudes with transparency and signature are in an album here:http://imgur.com/a/i0Gu3#0
imgur nuked one of the pictures for some reason, so I've attached them all to this post instead.
You can link this thread simply by putting a link tag around the image tag if you so choose
Attached image(s)
I think i'd like to try this..
cool - best thing to do is find me when I'm online (not too hard) and ask to be tested
p.s. this goes for everyone, as things stand.
New clause in OP: Testers cannot test themselves for belts.
None of the testers have done this (and passed) in the past, but I may as well add it to the OP because it sure has been a temptation for me to do this
Congratulations to crzy242 on gaining Yellow Belt and SecretSalamander on gaining White Belt!
Congratulations to PolarisTR on gaining White Belt!
can i try for black belt.. lol i mean white belt
yes
Congratulations to Agamemnon who has gained Orange Belt!
I wanna do the yellow belt, who is up for testing me?
Do you have a good time on the weekend? If so, I'm sure one of us will be able to make it.
any of the examiners online right now? : )
Congratulations to kaos who has gained a White Belt.
Paul, you might want to strike me from the active list if you haven't already. xlro, if you catch me on IRC I can run you a test, rules permitting.
Paul: how about players may test once every 30 days, rather than on specific days? It doesn't seem easier to arrange tests this way, but that could just be because I've been really busy. I'll probably forget more often than not to be on top of it for the "one weekend", but I check the forums often enough that I can see and maybe set up something with posters who didn't make the date so to speak.
Yeah, what I've been doing lately is just running them ad-hoc. Don't worry, it's current rather than active - some of the examiners haven't tested a single person yet.
Congratulations to Kully who has just gained a Yellow Belt!
Can I still get a belt?
yes
I ended up giving up the monthly idea and now am doing it weekly. The good part is that if you complete a belt, you can try out for the next one straight away. But if you fail one, you have to wait that week.
So Mario, if you complete white, yellow, orange and green, sure try blue! But if you fail on one of them, then you'll have to wait a week.
Anyone who wants to have a go: Please pm me a time you can do, or say when on this forum. I'm increasingly busy so I do need to know in advance so I'm not going on randomly.
is this still possible to do? id like to try, although ill crash at orange or something xD
go for it. Tell me a time (I'm EST at the moment) and I'll be on nullpomino then. I'd rather late evenings and need at least 1 day's notice.
mhh ok lets see, this friday july 12th between 16-20pm est?
w t f ... is it even physically posisble to get a black belt... ? what rank is blink in ?
edit: als could i try out with intendant as well ?
No-one's gone past green as so far top players have not been practising for hours on the belt. I built black so that players like blink and hebo would have to practise for a couple hundred hours before they gain the belt.
cool might do it:p martial art tetris
as I say, give me at least 24 hours' notice and I'll do my best
i actually take back my request.. sory for the toruble !
Can i sign up for white belt? PM
I always thought this was a good idea and would be interested in trying this again
tomorrow midday EST I am testing Kata - I can do then if you can.
Didn't mean to step on toes, but I was on and Katatoniopeth was ready, so I went ahead and did his test. He passed.
I don't remember what the rules were for 180 kicks, but the OP leaves it pretty muddy; do you remember the exact details?
Also, are we still sticking to the 1 month between tests thing?
180 kicks 1 up and down without walls are ok as are 2 up and down with walls. Basically what was ok in your HDTL mode A is ok.
Also thanks myndzi! I would love this to be a community-tests-community thing, as long as we have the replays in cases which we might be surprised about - like me getting black
I think it's really complicated to get the right replay saved and tagged locally, and it relies on the test-ee. I could video capture tests fairly easily though.
If the HDTL kicks are okay as a definition, then people can set up a specific rule file that will be authoritative in what is allowed and what is not allowed. Just change the kicks to 180 mild kicks.
yeah. idc about videos for most but if you're going for a high belt it may be of interest
So what about the test timing? Monthly? Weekly? What about something like monthly after a fail? Since this thread is seeing some new activity, I'm sure we'll have more than one person who can qualify past white eager to take the first few tests.
Correct. Immediate new test after success. 1 week wait after fail.
Congrats to Katatoniopeth for passing his yellow belt test today
Point of clarification: I don't remember, but when the requirement is something such as 'LSD -> B2B LSD', does that mean that it has to be two spins in a row (combo style), or just that the second b2b must have b2b from the first (pieces can be stacked inbetween) ?
Pieces may be stacked in between, as the definition of b2b allows
hey, I wanna test for my yellow belt whenever someone's ready to test me
Paul: just checking
Wizard: ya gotta start at the bottom and work your way up, but as long as you keep passing you can take em one after another. I can test you sometime today if you like, though I have an errand to run for the next hour-ish. Add me on skype ('myndzi') and I'll drop you a message when I'm free.
Congrats to wizard944 on passing the white & yellow belt tests today
There are some rough spots in the requirements so I'm gonna attempt to smooth some of 'em out with some examples.
There are some requirements written like 'Tetris -> B2B Tetris', 'TSD -> B2B TSD', 'LST/JST -> B2B LST/JST'
Specifically, these do not need to be combos, but they should not have other clears in-between them (including clears that would maintain B2B). So for B2B Tetris:
For combo setups such as 2-wide, all the combo clears should be within the specified width, with an exception where noted for skimming with I-pieces. For 6-combo in 2-wide, that means 7 clears in the 2-wide space. Examples:
The second combo is not a 6-combo 2-wide since one of the clears was in a 1-wide well. You can avoid this by 1) stacking a clean bottom, 2) using your restart, or 3) stacking higher and doing a longer combo. Example:
Similarly, clears for one setup do not count for another setup. You can compensate by adding extra lines to the combo here as well, but it's easier on us if you make a clean break of it. Examples:
Less than 8-combo would fail in this case.
This is easier on the judges
I-skimming is allowed in all combos, so this is okay:
Regarding the stepped combo, when it says 'steps must be at least 2 high', that means that these are okay:
While these are not okay:
Regarding restarts:
On setups tests that allow restarts, you may restart the given number of times at any point in the test. The clock will keep running, so don't stop to talk/chat, just go for it! If the restart breaks a setup, that setup must be re-built, but any completed setups will be kept. For example, the white belt setups test (TSD, Tetris -> B2B Tetris):
On the spin tests, pay attention to which kind of spins are allowed! The white belt test, for example, requires T-spin doubles -- but the yellow belt test allows ANY T-spins, including singles, minis, triples, etc. So this sequence for white belt would only count for 1 T-spin:
Okay, I had a little fun there
...but it would count for 5 on the yellow belt test.
Please note that some tests will ask for an Ultra room with a time limit, but the room time limit is NOT necessarily the limit for the test itself. This is simply because Ultra is the easiest "empty screen" room we can put you in, but it only allows time limits that are multiples of a minute. The yellow belt test, for example, has a time limit of 1:30 but the room limit will have to be 2:00. For tests like this, the tester will need to keep a separate timer, so please remember to wait for them to say they are ready before starting your games!
That's all I can think of for now, if you have anything to add to this list, please say
tetris belt pls.
Edit: PMed Paul678
can i become examiner?
edit: if i become examiner, can i test myself?
1. yes
2. no
jkwon examined me, i haz yellow and white belt now.
PM me if you need record of convo on netplay
-offiegunner
He was way below the margins, but grats anyway to Jkwon for completing his green belt.
Is this still going on and if it is I want to enter
Kind of. But I don't have the time any more to test. If you would like to enter, send an unedited video of your attempts to me. I'll then award it if you pass. Be stringent and fair on yourself - don't ignore an initial failure on the test because it's more convenient, even if it is tempting.
