Do u have any less big words O.O
That was like, 3rd grade English.... "directions" was the longest word besides preservation, which was being defined... Let's not be too lazy to read your own advice now.

Paradox

meh the point of language is to communicate. if you can't simplify things for people then language fails.

Also I think "preservation" is on a higher level than "directions". I usually don't understand what Kitaru says either.

NoManual

I think it depends which game you play on where you would clear lines/(stack). I stack mostly to the left, leaving space for l lines to slide in and do Tetrises for me. I'm pretty sure (atleast for Tetris Party Deluxe for my DS, 'cus of the minor line clear delay..) that tetris stacking is faster than combo stacking (clearing 1,2,3 lines instead of a tetris, 4). With that said, im no professional at sprint, still learning to become better, and trying to tetris as much as possible, even when I play on, for instance, Block Box (even tho comboing doesn't matter 'cus of no line clear delay).

Quote from: Kitaru
DAS preservation is when you charge DAS once and maintain it over the course several piece spawns. For example, if you have your 2-wide set up on the right, you'd hold right for the first piece, rotate as necessary, and -- keeping right held -- hit hard drop. Since DAS charge does not reset until you release the key or change directions, DAS will still be charged when the next piece enters the field. Just rotate as necessary and hard drop every piece in the combo when they hit the wall without letting go of right.

Well... while I'll agree that the burden of communication should fall on the speaker, it's not always the case. (I've read, for instance, in Japan it is the responsibility of the listener to understand the speaker.) Some people just need to try harder to understand things. It isn't always the speaker's fault. And really, sometimes the reader just needs to pick up a dictionary (or do a search in the Tetris wiki).

Anyhow, let me see if I can break this down.

There are two parts of DAS: DAS and autorepeat (Kitaru is using both parts under the umbrella term of just "DAS").
DAS = press and hold down the "go right" button. Your piece will move right once, but then wait a few frames before moving again. These few "waiting frames" make up what we call DAS (delayed auto shift, coined by Jago, I think).
Autorepeat = after the DAS phase is over, the piece will move repeatedly to the right (1 column per frame (1G) or 1 column per 2 frames (1/2G), etc.).

DAS preservation broken down:
  • T-piece spawns
  • Hold down the right button (we're keeping it held down throughout all of these steps)
  • Piece moves once
  • A few DAS "waiting" frames go by
  • DAS wait is over, autorepeat begins
  • Piece autorepeats to the right wall
  • Hard drop
  • (We're still holding down the right button this whole time.)
  • J-piece spawns
  • The piece skips the DAS phase and goes straight to autorepeat.
So, we can stop all these DAS frames from ever coming into being by using DAS preservation. One way we can take advantage of that is by, say, doing a 2-wide combo on the rightmost columns (just holding down the right button the whole time). For example, if the game uses 10 frame DAS and we do an 8 combo. That's 8 pieces we skipped DAS on: we saved a total of 80 frames, or 1.33 seconds.

The problem is that we must also take line clear delay into account. If we make Doubles for a combo instead of standard Tetrises, we're going to use more line clear frames. All line clears in Tetris Friends use roughly 12 frames. We can clear four lines either all at once using a Tetris (12 frames) or by using two doubles (24 frames). So, continuing with the example above, we saved 80 frames, but we wasted 48 frames (8*12 for doubles minus 4*12 compared to Tetrises). All in all, in this example we would save 32 frames, or 2.67 per line clear ((80-48)/16), by using DAS preservation.

However, this assumes we make only doubles and use 10 DAS frames. The more singles we make, the more waste. The less DAS frames we're allowed, the less we save. So, I wouldn't say Comboing is faster just yet.

virulent

i'd say in fewer words:
keeping your finger on the left/right button w/o letting go so the next block moves left/right immediately when it spawns

when you keep holding the right button, there will be no delay in your pieces going right after you hard drop them. This is what happens in a 2 wide. When you don't, there will be a delay in your pieces going right when you start to hold the right button.

edit: viru said it well.

I'd say Caffeine explained it with the most details, and the complicated terms for tetris newcomers.
And virulent said it great for newcomers and follows perfectly what Caffeine said.

Also, there are lots of different threads on "Improving your Sprint time", you could look them up and you'll probably get some usefull information there

Protip: Play faster.
To play faster just play a lot and make sure you are playing correctly and didn't pick up any bad habbits.
Learn finesse, stacking, downstacking, stay relaxed, concentrate on your game and speed will come with time.
I'm not sub 45 but I'm sure this is what you have to do since I read so much threads where people were asking advice like you, and they always summed it up with those words.

( I'm not going to use complicated tetris terms, just look up some threads about Sprint, Speed Advice and you'll probably learn a lot and it'll get you going the right way, gl )
