Exactly, we're not exactly trying to spout absolutes but just possibilities. That's what the "study" is for. :3

The exchange of ideas and anecdotes, slowly accumulated over time might actually mean we would have a working hypothesis that can slowly be tested to become fact.

I'm heavily audio reliant too. Sound stimuli affects me majorly, I can't play tetris well if there's no sound on lock. It's weird. XD

The fact that my performance is adversely affected by music with tempo below my top speed is basically an existence proof. <_> Telling me I'm wrong about how things personally affect me seems a little odd.
I'm not saying your wrong! I'm just saying that my experience differs from yours so chances are we'll have different opinions on this issue (not that i'm saying either of our opinions are the absolute   right ones.)

For me, sound plays a big role in maintaining placement rhythm. Whether it is movement sounds in the game or the clack of keys, sound is of great use to me. If I'm listening to music while I'm playing, I have to make a concerted effort to focus on the rhythm of the sounds rather than the beat of the music to maintain that speed. At that point, I'm hearing the music rather than listening to it; it is purely in the background and might as well be noise. I think that sort of defeats the purpose of listening to music while playing, so I tend to choose to do one or the other. (Sometimes, however, I'd really like to do both. In these cases, I'm glad I have a general idea of what music does not adversely affect me, haha.)
iawtp, although I like knowing what factors are a significant detriment to my performance -- e.g., being unable to hear the sounds isn't ideal. In the end, practice is always going to be a better use of time than finding the absolute "ideal environment" for play. I don't think anyone will ever be at a stage where "external optimizations" are all that is left to improve their performance, haha.
Aww, haha, you make me sad. :<
QFE. Don't you guys go thinking I'm trying to say people should go looking for "that perfect track..." I think "natural" is the way to go and merely wanted to chime in on this discussion with my own observations.

"It wouldn't be based on (or even be imperative to) something as arbitrary as the tempo" sounded pretty absolute to me!
