[!--quoteo--][div class=\\\'quotetop\\\']QUOTE[/div][div class=\\\'quotemain\\\'][!--quotec--]Columns Clone is a clone of the classic Genesis/Mega Drive game Columns, written in LÖVE. It's still a major work-in-progress.

There are three difficulty options for gameplay, ranging from Easy (4 colors) to Hard (6 colors). It can get pretty challenging, but the interesting scoring system provides a lot of oppertunities for big points.

Feedback is very much welcome

Oh hey, I built that.

The source code is available, too, so if you want to hack at it you're more than welcome. It's built somewhat generically, so you can replace the "clear" checking function with whatever floats your boat.

Cool, I'm going to give this a try later.

Xkeeper is a long-time Tetris player, holding high scores on Gdward Tetris, scripting Netplay functionality into NES Tetris, and probably other things I'm not aware of.

Thanks. I'm also a weak GM player in TGM1 and maybe S8 in TGM2, but it's been years

I used to be over at Tetrisconcept long ago, but I think that place has kind of died? Or at least it doesn't seem active any more.

I was going to say you posted there "recently," but that was like nine months ago.  I don't know if that constitutes "time flies" or "Tetris is slow," haha. Off-channel communication might have something to do with it as well. In absence of "big Tetris news," folks just chat in IRC or on Facebook and whatnot. Outside of your usual tournament and score threads and whatever off-topic stuff gets posted, I can't think of a whole lot that has really happened lately (outside of Puyo Puyo Tetris, that is -- get hype! :v)

Anyway, back to topic, the scoring system in this seems neat.  I think I'll forward it to the Japanese players to give it a spin, hehe.

Yeah, the scoring is totally different from the "original" Columns. It's a little complicated and might not make sense at first, but it works like this:

Base score: (Blocks cleared - 2) x 100 x (Level + 1)
Chain score: (Total chain) x (This piece's chain)

So if you drop a block that causes a 3-chain, then another piece that clears something, and finally a third piece that clears a 4-chain, you end up with something like this:

100 x (1 x 1) = 100
100 x (2 x 2) = 400
100 x (3 x 3) = 900
-
100 x (4 x 1) = 400
-
100 x (5 x 1) = 500
100 x (6 x 2) = 1200
100 x (7 x 3) = 2100
100 x (8 x 4) = 3600

The scoring can get kind of ridiculous if you play in Easy for a while.

I did not play original Columns, but I've enjoyed this game a lot. It runs very fluently.
If you plan to have additional gamemodes - I'll be sure to tell the ideas I've got already.

Xkeeper

I'm open to suggestions. I was thinking last night of how to implement a simple Time Attack mode (say, 3 minutes to score as many points as possible) or other ideas.

The engine is ideally malleable enough to fit several types of gameplay.

change "Rotate" to "Cycle"

currently there is only "Cycle down"

add "Cycle up" button

[!--quoteo--][div class=\\\'quotetop\\\']QUOTE[/div][div class=\\\'quotemain\\\'][!--quotec--]It might take a while, but you'll find people who are excited about your project. Don't give up.[/quote]

I thought that was really touching. ^^; I'll try out your game very soon.
