there are some skin packs at tepples' site:

but the only way to mute the bgm is to modify the source code and recompile.

I don't get how to apply those skins; I can find the folder on LJ, but idk how to activate any of its contents.

you could rename the custom bg to ljbg and put it in your lj folder. i haven't really messed with the skin changer in lockjaw but i don't think lj-contrib.zip contains all the files you would need for that method to work. you'd probably want to download Rich Nagel's skin selector from meow's link anyway.

and now that i think about it you could probably remove the bgm file to mute the music.

To mute bgm u can delete bgm.s3m

"Active time only" refers to the time that the player could input buttons and have "instantaneous" response. I.e. playtime - line clear delay - ARE.

You should count total time.
