Live Streaming on Ustream Guide

Okay, here's a quick guide on how to live stream on Ustream.  Maybe this will encourage a few more people to start live streaming on Hard Drop's main page.

How To Stream Standard Quality Streams (Mac & PC)

1.  Go to http://www.ustream.tv/login-signup and create an account or log into an existing one.
(PM me if you are interested in streaming for Hard Drop and want the username/password)

2.  Once logged in, click the green "Broadcast Now" button at the top right of the screen:

3.  You should now be at the Ustream broadcaster, which looks like this:

4.  Select your Video input device, and Audio input device.  

Note:  If you want to stream your desktop, you'll need to install software to have that choice in the dropdown list.  

For PC, you can use: VHScreenCap ( [a href=\\\"http://www.splitmedialabs.com/downloads/VHSC_inst.exe]http://www.splitmedialabs.com/downloads/VHSC_inst.exe )
For Mac, you can use: Camtwist ( http://allocinit.com/images/b/b6/CamTwist-2.1.dmg )

After installing, reload the broadcaster and choose the appropriate device in the video source dropdown menu.

5.  Hit "Start Broadcast" to start streaming.  Hit "Start Record" to have your live broadcast recorded, you will be given an option to save the recording when you hit "Stop Record".  

6.  Hit Stop Broadcast when done.

How To Stream High Quality Streams(PC directions)


1.  Go to http://www.ustream.tv/login-signup and create an account or log into an existing one.
(PM me if you are interested in streaming for Hard Drop and want the username/password)

2.  Download and install Adobe Flash Media Live Encoder:  http://www.harddrop.com/file/flashmedialiveencoder-v301.msi

3.  Go to http://www.ustream.tv/mybroadcasts and click on the "Advanced" tab.  Scroll down until you see

and click the button to download the file.

4.  Start Adobe Flash Media Live Encoder.  Go to File -> Open Profile -> and select the XML you downloaded in Step 3.

5.  Select your Video input device, and Audio input device.

6.  Adjust your input size, output size and bitrates.  The default settings are poor quality, make sure to increase both of them.

7.  Hit Start on Adobe Media Flash Encoder Live.

8.  Go back to http://www.ustream.tv and click the green "Broadcast Now" button at the top right of the screen:

10.  Hit "Start Broadcast" to start streaming.  Hit "Start Record" to have your live broadcast recorded, you will be given an option to save the recording when you hit "Stop Record".  

11.  Hit Stop Broadcast when done.  Also hit Stop on Adobe Flash Media Live Encoder, and close it.

depending on qualilty and amount of viewers i'd say you need around 30KB/s - 70KB/s uploading speed.

i've used both. vhscreencap can record at a higher fps and it's also a lot easier to select the portions of the screen you want to capture.

using the adobe. any ideas on boosting performance, perhaps not using 60 fps? i have a nice computer so shouldnt be a problem, im probably just not doing something very efficent
