i do the running my hands through increasingly hot water if i feel like getting up

you can use disposable hand warmers (they cost about 50 cents a pack and last like 7 hours), some people use these when doing outdoor activities (skiing, other activities in the cold) to keep their hands warm.  NFL players, especially quarterbacks use these hand warmers during outdoor games
