Hi, remember me?  Sorry I haven't been around lately - I've had a free MMORPG community for about 4 years now, but recently I've been busy revamping it with Blink.  I borrowed some of the code from Hard Drop so if some of it looks familiar that's why.  We're finally done and I've relaunched the website today.  The website was attracting alot of visitors and members before the revamp, so I hope you guys check it out and support it too if you're a fan of free MMOs.

I had a dream about this music today WHOOP!

I ran a site on a Go Daddy VPS for about six months. It's still shared; that's why it's called a virtual private server. All it buys you over shared hosting are the following:

• Ability to turn off magic_quotes_gpc in PHP
• More flexible CGI in general
• Cron jobs
• Ability to configure MySQL for full-text indexing of words shorter than four letters
• Some offer PostgreSQL only to VPS or higher, not shared hosting

We were originally allocated 256 MB of RAM, but the server's management console, based on Java servlets, took up 100 MB of that according to 'top'. And it was stuck on CentOS with some outdated versions of Apache and PHP for which I couldn't verify the history of backported security fixes.

No, we're using a shared server right now and it has cron jobs and postgreSQL etc. Those features are included in shared hosting cpanel. Shared means we're on a server that hosts hundreds or even thousands of sites which share the same resources on a single powerful server. If one person hogs up the bandwith it can cause lag for everyone else. If the server goes down, all the sites go down.

VPS is different it's like a dedicated server that they split into partitions so you have more control. You can restart the server like a dedicated server. Someone on the same server can have their VPS crash but your VPS can still be up. And you have your own resources that doesn't effect other people if you use too much. Also they don't host 1000s of sites on a server but maybe split the server into 10 and you own a slice of it.
