***UPDATED AND FINALIZED AS OF 10/5/2011***

Hi Everyone,

I'm part of the team that is putting together the Tetris Tournament @ USC in October. This is the followup to last years Classic Tetris World Championship. This year, as already mentioned will include PSn Tetris in addition to the NES version.

I have more information about the tourney, so I thought I would share it here first!

Event:
October 16, 2011 - 10am (all day event)
@ USC Bovard Auditorium - Los Angeles, California

NES Tournament
Grand Prize $1000

Qualifying Rounds 10am - 1pm
Type B Height 0.  Player chooses level
Top 8 move onto semi finals.

Semi Finals
Head to Head tournament of Type A Tetris starting on level 18.
Best of 3, score based.
Get down to final 2

Finals
Head to Head type A starting on level 18.   Best of 5 series.

PSn Tournament
Grand Prize $1000 1vs.1
Grand Prize $1000 2vs.2 (Team Battle)
Same fees to enter and attempt in the tournament.

1vs.1 Qualifying Rounds 10am-1pm
Tetris PSN - Origin Variant on Level 1
Top 8 players with the fastest 40 Lines times will move to semi-finals. In the event of a tie, the player with the higher score will move up in rank. In the event that both time and score are identical, the player who submitted their score first will take priority.

Semi Finals  1vs.1
Top 8 players battle on stage in a single elimination, best of 7 seeded bracket system. Semi Finals will end when the top two players remain. The variant is Tetris Battle with no items.

Finals 1vs.1
Top 2 players battle on stage in a best of 7 match to determine the winner. Same variant.

Team Qualifying/Semi's Rounds 11am-1pm
Tetris PSN - Team Battle Variant (No Items)
32 Teams will battle in a single elimination Best of 3. Registration closes once 32 teams are registered.

Team Finals
Top 2 teams will battle on stage in a best of 7 match to determine the winner. Same variant.
Same fees apply per person. So, total team entry would be $20.

We're hoping that we can create a competitive feel to the team tournament by having colleges/universities facing off against each other. Don't get me wrong, teams are still open to the public. But, if you are currently in a higher education institution and you can find a partner from your campus, you can represent your school in the tourney!

ANY PERSON CAN ENTER AND QUALIFY FOR EACH TOURNAMENT. To enter and attempt to qualify, the cost of entry, plus one attempt per tournament will be $10(Entry and 1 attempt (NES))+$3(PSn 1vs1)+$3(PSn Teams - cost per person) = TOTAL $16.00
I'm not saying that the $10 requires you to only qualify for the NES, this is just an example...

Advance team registration is available through me (Fees aren't due till you sign in the day of). Please PM me your information or you can email them to me at shawn@blueplanetsoftware.com

PRE-REGISTRATION WILL CLOSE ON 10/14. On the day of the tournament, team registration will open at 10am and close at 11am. Team tournament will begin @ 11.

Thanks!

Don't have the money to travel to the US, nor the ability to just ignore my degree for a week or so, but I'd like to post anyway just to say I totally support what you guys are doing, and especially the addition of a newer game than just NES Tetris.

Are custom controllers allowed? I would like to use an arcade stick for the PS3 tournament if possible.

Wow! This sounds awesome! I wish I could go, but I'm all the way across the country and I'm no good at NES or playstation Tetris.

You may bring in your own Sony PS3 controller if you'd like, however any other controller other than the OEM (standard sony branded PS3) version won't be allowed, sorry.

Ah, okay. No worries! Just means I have to practice more with a Sony controller.

what's the format for the rounds after qualification?  Is it still bo3?

EDIT: nevermind, just read it.  Yes it is.

I have a question though:

How come it's called World Championships when only US residents can enter?

Kitaru

I still wish it could have been Tetris Splash instead of PSN. :/

Do you have to pay the $10 initial registration for each individual tournament, or is it $3 per additional entry attempt after you buy your ticket? (In other words, is entering all three events $30 for base attempts or $16?)

Sorry Blink, I don't have an answer for that. However, the Classic part of the title has been removed as other Tetris games will be apart of the tourney.

There will also be Technosources table top Tetris game - Tetris Link as another tournament. Details are still not set, but I will update when I know more.

The $10 registration fee is a one time charge to enter the event. Additional attempts are $3. As for entering multiple tourneys, we're not finalized on that detail yet, I will get back to you when I find out.

kbr  can you confirm that the 2v2 team mode is the one with solid garbage?  Do you think it can be changed to the regular garbage 2v2 mode?

Is it too late to increase it to bo5 format? Bo3 is so unforgiving!

Worth a shot.

Also, will there be seedings or are matches random after qualifying?

2v2 will be the Team Battle mode which has solid garbage lines. We'll be seeding the final players in 1vs1 based off sprint times. And the team battle will be random.

Due to the timeframe of the finals, we can only go a max of Bo3. I know it adds more pressure, but it's a tournament! Good Luck Blink!

Blink

thanks for the response kbr.

Do you know if perfect clears that are done on top of solid garbage  in team mode count as a perfect clear?

$10 to get in the door. $3 per addt attempts. Yes, $16 to try all three...As I mentioned earlier, we're still deciding if players can enter and qualify for more than one. Reason being, the finals will be going on simultaneously...
