You don't need to be vip to get your 40 line time saved, but you need it to have your replay saved. Although when I got sub-30 I wasn't vip (and I still am not) I used recording software when I played 40 lines so that I would have a live recording of it getting done.

I don't play 40L anymore, I find it less helpful for nullpo w/ all spins. I guess I could play 40L while doing spins but playing vs sounds good enough.
