I first played tetris probably somewhere in the mid 80's on the PC (1986?).
Then I played it again in the mid 90's in another version.
Those were all single player versions I guess..

I started playing online tetris exactly 1 year ago tomorrow smile.gif

Posted by: lmartins Aug 31 2010, 01:46 PM

I started playing on the NES maybe 20 years ago. Played very rarely until about 13 months ago when I found tetris friends and started playing multiplayer about a year ago.

I've been playing for 16 years. It started in 1994 with the 1989 and NES versions, in '96 I started playing the variant Tetris blast, which was just interesting. I didn't play consistently until 2000, and then I've been a member of Tetris Friends for over a year now.

Posted by: NoManual Sep 2 2010, 01:21 PM

Played for about 12 years or something. But didnt went hardcore until now, when I found out about HD wink.gif I will indeed concentrate more on Tetris when I come home, instead of wow, sc2 etcetc tongue.gif

I've been playing tetris for about 10 years now. I got started on Magical Tetris Challenge for the N64 in the late 1990's, and then didn't play for a while until I got Tetris Splash.

Posted by: SecretSalamander Sep 2 2010, 05:35 PM

The first game I played was Windows Entertainment Pack Tetris, this was around 1994

Then I didn't really play again until around 2000, and played various console/handheld games and clones

I played Tnet2 for a few months from 2001-2002

Then I really started playing seriously when I found TGM2 in 2006

Posted by: Apocalypse Sep 2 2010, 07:50 PM

I've been playing tetris since its release, about 1 1/2 yr ago (Blockbox).

But I've been dropping blocks since 6-7 yrs ago. Started off in tnet2 chasing a girl I liked (which happens to be my current gf, true love story) then got shut down, took nearly a 2 yr break, played cultris, took a 4 months break, then...I started my life.

Ive been playing tetris on the computer for maybe 10 months, but about 10 years before that i used to play on this little retro handheld game.

13 Years with Magical Tetris Challenge (N64), playing The New Tetris a few times. You can believe me when I say that more than one "next piece", the function "hold", and "t-spin" were concepts I barely had practice with until last year.

hmmmmmmmmmmm 4 years
maybe
=( it's hard to convert from ds back to pc and vice versa

and i used to play tetris when i was little.. but i dont think it counts.. since i tried building castles and stuff out of the blocks..... doot doo doo

For me, I started pc tetris last september, some tetris ds before that though.

Posted by: Beastin_Shen Oct 22 2010, 04:08 PM

eh i had gameboy tetris, but tetris ds caught my attention and i got pretty good playing that, then it was facebook sprint that got me playing again, then i was off and on throughout 2009 until i fell in love with toj and got a lot better. i went TF - BB - TOJ - Nullpo.

Man, I remember tetrinet and tetrifast. I hated tetrinet because you'd tell it to move a piece and then half a second later it would perhaps deign to do it. (Maybe it was just my computer/connection, though XD) Tetrifast was a little better, if I remember correctly.

I've been playing for a while... I first started playing TDS in December 2006, picked up TGM in first half 2007, then put it down, then picked it back up for good sometime around September 2008. So, I've been playing "professionally" for a bit over two years.

At the beginning, before I was TGM1 Gm, I played around two or three hours a day. However, now I play like half an hour a day tops, if at all.

Looked around the forum and saw that we didn't have this type of thread, or we might have one but I only bothered to look back 3 pages yeah.

So any who, the thread topic is self explanatory. Just tell us how you got into Tetris and when, I'm sure there are funny stories to be had. I'll start off yeah:

So 2 years ago my friend moved into his basement after his sister left the house, in his basement we found an SNES, and with it Tetris and Dr.Mario, along with other block buster hits. Tetris was the most played one, with sessions lasting 2+ hours. This carried on for 2 months, then one of the controllers broke leaving us with 1 working one and 2 duds. This ended our SNES Tetris career and an obsession that didn't fully ignite until December last year, when Tetris was finally announced for the PS3. I was like "Dude, we have to get this" towards my friend, we both own PS3s and seemed like an excellent investment. Fast forward and I get it before he does, play it to hell and actually start to get good. After awhile I show him my records and he straight up gives up Tetris, he never got it for PS3, he hasn't played since that one time I took my system to his house. Now here I am, currently at sub 1:05 and improving bit by bit each time I play, with 4 different versions installed on my computer, 2 official versions bought off PSN (the full version and the mini).

Whats you story? (it doesn't have to be this detailed btw)

Posted by: Shizi Apr 19 2011, 04:27 AM

When I was in 1st or 2nd grade, I had the original gameboy with tetris in it. I would hook up my gameboy with my uncle's and play vs him.

In 7th grade (1999 so old T_T) my friends introduced me to Tnet. We would play 2v2 between the 4 of us... that's when I got addicted to it. I remember thinking... why are people so fu**ing fast? Then I found out they were using the tfast client, so I got that and have been playing off and on ever since.

Posted by: kevincentius Apr 19 2011, 04:56 AM

I first played on a game pack in windows (winGames if I'm not mistaken.. inside there are chip's challenge, jezzball, pipe dreams and the kind of). since it was the best game at that time for me, I played it the most

But because my friends think of Tetris as a stupid game I left it and play other games~

Several years later (about two years ago) when I want to play a bit of tetris I google it and found tetrisfriends and was addicted to the multiplayer tetris

Then about a year after (this is the time I showed that tetris isn't a stupid game..) when searching on YouTube for great Tetris players I found Jtadore on cultris so I downloaded cultris, and the cultris players suggest me to go to harddrop.com xD . Here I found and download nullpomino (I ever confused because when I google nullpomino it redirects to porn sites O_o)

Until now my tetris games are only TF NP and Cultris

Posted by: jemm_4 Apr 19 2011, 05:28 AM

Ok so mine is fascinating. I got my laptop like 2 years ago got bored because my laptop had nothing in it, I googled fun games, found TF played there and reached rank 6 on 2P and thought I was pro, then live came out and so on and so forth. See didn't I tell you, it was fascinating?!

Posted by: sonic Apr 19 2011, 08:17 AM

my tattoo artist was telling me about tetris when inking me one day two july's ago, and challenged me to beat his rank 14 on tetris friends battle 2p. it took about a week, and soon after that "live" came out and he challenged me to a match there. we played, i shut him out, and he hasn't played tetris since :x my next tattooing session seemed extra painful for some reason...

Blockles.

Posted by: DAS44 Apr 19 2011, 01:45 PM

Procrastination brought me to TF (I know I know)

Kinda snowballed from there, now everyone I know thinks I'm a freak until I show them Lapsi or Apoc's records.

Posted by: ohitsstef Apr 19 2011, 02:22 PM

I used to play Tetris marathon on PC when I was little the goal of the game, according to my cousins, was to build a pretty castle. I soon realized that they lied to me.

In high school my ex boyfriend gave me a ds-lite as a gift and tds was on it - so I played that. I played straight tetrises. In college I met a few people who played Blockles and I was hooked. I moved to TF - then BB - and slowly began expanding.

Now I'm a casual TOJ/BB player.

Posted by: Alexsweden Apr 19 2011, 03:38 PM

I got a copy of a tetris game to my mobile on a classtrip and played for the whole 5h busstrip Grin.png
When I eventually beat the game (999,999points) i got tired and found TF and tetris on facebook and from there I eventually found my way to tetrisconsept and then here.

Posted by: freakwithfire55 Apr 19 2011, 03:49 PM

someone installed tetris into my Ti-84 junior year. that resulted in me getting Ds in math and chemistry. i mean tetris vs listening to teacher, im sure tetris wins. senior year, some guy challenged me to beat his high score on his ti-89. i did. he hacked it to beat my score. i found out how he hacked it and i obliterated his score. and then he told about blockles, where i met radiance, who showed me this site.

Posted by: cubixcreature Apr 19 2011, 03:57 PM

I've been playing Tetris on the Gameboy for some 12 years of my life now, and Tetris Worlds on PS2. I started playing TF on Facebook a while back, and that is what got me hooked and now playing competitive tetris. I remember watching the 30 some second times and thinking they were all hacks, which of course some of them were. I quickly learned how capable I was to reach these times. I think my Fastest time back then was around 1:10 seconds.

i think this thread does exist already but i haven't been able to find it either..if anyone can we'll merge them k?

1 of my friends in jhs asked me to play tnet on a multiplayer server [0c3.net] n it was fun~ so i started playing w/o her n i ended up finding a better server [terranigma.org] n getting super addicted [playing specials] joined a team [asiandynasty] n after years n years of addiction..i am still here :s

I thought one day, I'm bored what to play. Then I remembered there was something called Tetris. I googled Tetris and I got tetrisfriends. I first played marathon every once in a while. Then the next year I decided I wanted to save my score and signed up. Then by accidentally pressing arena, I started playing live Tetris. Then I got introduced to HD and started other Tetris variants. I am now a BB/TOJ player for the most part.

Posted by: Johnny147 Apr 19 2011, 08:16 PM

I first played Tetris on the NES and I liked it from there, but didn't really play much until I bought TDS when I bought my DS lite. I played a lot of the online vs on there for a few years on and off. October 2009 I decided to see if there were any PC Tetris games that were competitive like TDS and see how I stacked up. I found TF and from there found HD.

Posted by: Radiance Apr 19 2011, 08:23 PM

blockles in 2008. i thought i was pretty good at gameboy tetris and random flash tetris games, so i searched up "online multiplayer tetris".

i went by a lot of names on blockles, the biggest ones being Quicksand and Reveillark. the community of strong (at the time), and dedicated players kept me reaching for higher goals. i eventually found tetrisconcept and blockbox, and the rest is history.

Posted by: Boingloing Apr 19 2011, 08:36 PM

Magical Tetris Challenge is my first tetris game, but I started playing a lot when I got TDS and started battling my brother a lot. Then I started playing online and got my rating to about 7000, stopped, started again and got owned, looked up a tetris community, found HD and PC games, got tired of the community, and stopped. People at school that I don't even talk to now know of my TF sprint record(39 seconds) because TF got popular in our school. lol.

This is something I've been meaning to do for a long time, so today I finally sat down and tried to remember as much as possible.

The first time I ever played Tetris was in 1990 at the ripe age of four years old. My parents took me along to a get-together at their friends house. Their friend's son, who was older than me, showed me his NES. He had Tetris and Dr. Mario. He mentioned that Dr. Mario had just came out, so that's what we played at first. Then he put in Tetris, and I fell in love at first sight. It was all I wanted to do for the rest of the night, and I believe I threw a tantrum when they said it was time to go.

Between 1990 and 1998 is very foggy, but I remember a couple of things here and there. In 1993, we visited my uncle's house, and my cousin showed my sister their new personal computer. On it... Microsoft Tetris. It was glorious, and I anxiously awaited my turn to play. Unfortunately for seven year old me, my evil older sister and cousin wouldn't let me have a turn. After leaving for home not having had my chance to play, Tetris was all I could think about. It was all I wanted to do.

Two years later, that burning desire to play Tetris re-awoken within me. My friend's family took me on a trip to the beach. I sat in a four hour drive with nothing else to do than watch my friend play on his Game Boy. The game looked so fun! Did I get a chance to play? NO!!! Once again, I was tempted beyond what any kid could be expected to handle, and I was denied. I believe this, along with what happened at my cousin's house, to have planted a seed deep within my psyche. Had I been able to play and had satisfied my curiosity, I don't think I would be the Tetris-obsessed zombie I am today. But since I could only watch and not play, I became totally enchanted by the game.

Some time after that, I got to play an arcade version that I randomly found in a bowling alley! I don't remember any details, though.

In 1998, shortly after Ocarina of Time came out, I started going over to a friend's house, and I finally got to play not only NES Tetris, but also Microsoft Tetris. His mom had the top score, which said something like "I love you, kids!", but I eventually beat it.

It must've been around 1998-1999 when we got the internet at my house. I was around twelve years old. One of the first things I did was download every Tetris game I could find. One of them being Tetrinet, which I dismissed as "stupid" because it had the gimmicky special attacks. I remember also downloading "Kid's Tetris" on download.com.

In 1999, I also got a GBC right when Pokemon Yellow came out. I quickly picked up Game Boy Tetris. I remember that my sister's boyfriend and I would see who could get the high score. We shared great frustration while watching my sister play, who absolutely refused to soft drop. I played this game for hours upon hours. My favorite thing to do was to test myself by playing B-type on heart levels.

In 2000 onward, I played a crap-load of Shockwave Tetris. It had a sweet sound track, a TTC seal of approval, and best of all... an online leaderboard. Man I used to love that game. I'd come home and see what the daily top scores were. I became intensely addicted, trying to reach higher and higher levels. I even emailed some of the top leaders to ask them about their strategies. Only one ever replied back. This was the first time I remember analyzing the scoring and gameplay. I remember posting on shockwave.com about how the pieces weren't centered properly when they spawned (I believe they spawned two columns away from the wall).

Shortly after, I started playing Tetrinet more regularly. It was around this time that I found the "Nintendo Mini Series" Tetris keychain at the Louvre on a trip to Paris. I spent the rest of the trip playing it. I remember buying The Next Tetris" for PC some time after this. Unfortunately, the online leaderboard feature was defunct before I got around to buying it. Still, very fun.

This would be around the time I began to endlessly search altavista.com for Tetris-related websites. The best by far was tetrislovers.tripod.com! It had scoreboards for two of my favorite games: Tetris DX and The New Tetris. It even had strategy articles! I closely followed the rivalry between the two top players on the TNT board: gilly and this other guy. I would go on to honing my skill in both games, but The New Tetris was especially interesting. I used to play my sister in the versus mode. She quit playing me when I figured out how to exploit T-Spins (no, they didn't send garbage: they'd cause an "avalanche." So, if you stacked up real messy and high up to the top, an avalanche would enable you to clear like ten lines at once).

Once Tetrinet 2 came out, I was totally hooked. I played every day after school religiously. I was absolutely astounded by the speed and skill of the players I saw. It blew me away. I became a speed junky.

In 2003, I learned that an multiplayer online version of Tetris came out on Xbox. I saved up and bought an Xbox as soon as I could. I was a couple months late into the game, but I quickly dominated, as I was already very familiar with PC Tetris Worlds (which I had bought right after it came out for PC in 2001). The competition on Worlds Live wasn't nearly as good as Tetrinet 2, and it wasn't as fast either, but I stuck to it since it was an "authentic" Tetris game. I also really enjoyed the voice chat feature. I got a big ego-stroke out of beating everyone all the time, and I met a bunch of friends in the process. Some of them, like passnot, still play regularly (now on Tetris Splash, I believe). Passnot, Jays lil sister, and I would play every night and have some really funny conversations. This would be the first game where I seriously started analyzing multiplayer strategy. I played this for at least a couple of years.

Around here, I first learned about TGM. I probably would've became more interested, but it just wasn't as fast as Tnet2. From 2003 onward, I'd play many various mobile Tetris games. I saw a couple HELLFIRE members on those leaderboards, too.

In 2005, after being fed up with not having any good Tetris websites out there, I started tetrisconcept. The userbase slowly built up, and in 2006, when Tetris DS came out, it started to get really popular. Tepples made Lockjaw, and I'd say it was the first "modern" clone. It was a really amazing (and fast) game. I played a butt-load of Tetris DS, and I even ran into Mihara (TGM creator). I beat him at first, but eventually he got a rematch and whooped me pretty bad. Later on, Tetris Mobile from EA hosted an online tournament, which I won. I got a trip for two to Hawaii and $2000. There, I met up with two TC members, and we visited BPS. They had an awesome Tetris collection on display. I learned that TTC people weren't evil at all. They're actually pretty nice in person.

After four years in the website game, I closed up tetrisconcept. I was very proud of it and its role in facilitating Tetris knowledge to the masses. However, a few disgruntled members, who weren't happy settling for an archived version, took it upon themselves to steal its content and make a copycat site under a slightly different domain name. I still don't understand why they couldn't have started their own unique site.

I joined harddrop.com in 2009 and have been playing these more recent games ever since. Man, good times. Here's to many years of Tetris ahead!

Posted by: ryan_heise Apr 20 2011, 01:33 AM

In December 2006, some random guy by the name of "caffeine" emailed me, out of the blue, to compliment me on my http://www.ryanheise.com/cube/speed.html. He liked the idea of watching replays of highscores (which was a fairly new idea for web games at the time), pointed me to a video of a high speed Tetris clone called Lockjaw, and said "I wish someone would make something this polished for speed Tetris".

Having seen the famous http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PhJG6YvtyaA video a few years earlier, my intrigue was reignited, and after considering the various legal implications, I decided to go ahead and build Tessellate.

While building Tessellate, I ran into a problem. The moment the game started to become even remotely playable, I became too easily distracted and found myself playing the game rather than doing any development on it!! As a result, it took me about 6 whole months to finish the game, but by the end of it, I had become a fairly decent player, and a new interest was born. The end :-)

As of today, I've officially been playing Tetris for two years.

Posted by: DarthDuck Oct 23 2011, 07:59 AM

This should be how many solid years you've been playing, otherwise I would win this one.

I've been playing Tetris "since the day it came out in 1989". That's 21 years but I had like a 15 year break. I played a lot on gameboy, and then on Dreamcast (that's Sega), but I didn't even know about tspins until like 4 months ago. I consider learning about tspins as when I "really" started.

I always had a deep love for tetris, and wish it went modern sooner otherwise I would have never stopped.

It's a good thing my signature says what it does. And I'm glad you sidestepped your usual disappointment of me taking consoles out of circulation. Looks like it was "The Next Tetris" just like aaron's link said, still no tspins there.

I might not have remembered correctly, but it was high school IPB Image

A couple years ago, my brother made a bet with some girl in his class. She was obsessed with Facebook Tetris friends and was relatively good. Long story short, he made a large bet with her and all of her friends that he could beat her Marathon score within a month. He beat her score on the very last day, but I felt like it took him too long, so I decided that I would beat everyone's score in a fraction of the time. During that time I played a ton of Tetris, beating the marathon score as well as the others by a mile.

Eventually my friends and I discovered that there was an actual Tetris friends website instead of just a facebook app and got really into it. Unfortunately, their interest dwindled while mine kept going. I ranked up to the top of Arena, but it felt lonely up there, haha. I soon noticed high ranking people's TF statuses saying stuff like "harddrop.com come join us."... so I did. I decided to get competitive with Tetris and switched my username to CaptainPaul for my competitive alter ego that I used for Harddrop and eventually every Tetris related thing. Grin.png

Exactly two years ago today I was on a 16-hour flight. My friend challenged me to in-flight Tetris and after I discovered "hold" I kicked his a**. When I got back home I searched Tetris on FB and got to the Tetris Battle beta, then the same friend got me to join TF on January 4, 2010, and here I am today.

Please don't talk about research like that without sharing it, makes me want to run in circles until I crash into something. IPB Image

Also, are some people immune to the tetris effect or typically resultant unusual behavior? I pride myself in being completely normal.

PS. You can use spoiler tags like this to cram an entire book into a post if you like.

it seems the most comon way pple get into tetris is by being challenged, well thats my way to,my reason is because my brother said i couldnt be better then him at it, now he refuses to play me:P

after realising how good i was compared to the average TF players i went on to finding other games like nullpo BB TOJ(canceled) texmaster

I am another who got started with tetris on the TI-83, I played it all the time throughout high school. I can honestly say it reduced my high school marks by at least 5% because it diverted so much time away from paying attention. I only ever got caught twice, once in english class (haha) and once by my favourite teacher who ended up thinking it was awesome.

I find it really interesting how some skills do not transfer over from one tetris medium to another. When playing with only two thumbs on the calculator I could spin in either direction with perfect efficiency but when I started playing on the computer with many fingers I still have trouble making a counter clockwise turn instead of three clockwise ones.

I first play tetris when I was a kid (Gameboy, about 2002-2003) then stopped soon after. I didn't play tetris till now, when my friends re-introduced me to this game, except in a multiplayer format named: Tetris Battle. After that I also started in Tetris Friends, currently increasing in rank until now, practicing hard to be one.

The first time I played tetris was probably when I was 7 or 8, the school had a win95-computer with Tetris (it was part of the Windows Entertainment Pack, along with other games like PipeDream and Chip's Challenge).

I also remember battling my music teacher in it, sharing the keyboard of course. I'd like to think I won most of the time, can't really remember Smile.png

And then I probably didn't play for a couple of years...

I remember I had some fake handheld Tetris game in my youth, so I guess that was the biggest influence on me since I played it quite a lot. So pretty much I've been playing Tetris for my whole life, very casually but still.

My cousin introduced it to me first about two years ago on Tetrisfriends--the site was so different back then o.o--. She was playing it and I was so into it when watching her play. I guess you can she was the most influential figure for me for shaping me into what I am now tetris-wise since I started playing eventually. I've surpassed her a while ago Grin.png

On/Off for nearly 20 years. One of my earliest childhood memories is playing tetris in co-op mode on the Japanese NES with my dad.

Posted by: yotipo91 Nov 22 2012, 12:27 PM

After browsing this thread, I'm surprised how many people started as recent as they did. Anywho I've yet to share my story.

My highschool issued laptops with lots of blocks, so a lot of my friends would play random flash games they could find. One of them was nblox and it was hosted on a website that was never blocked. In junior year, my ex-gf went on a forum that had an nblox high score system, so since I thought I was decent, I went ahead and beat the #1 person--thus I became addicted. I eventually strived to get 1 million on nblox.

Somewhere along the line I heard about Facebook's Tetris Friends which included Marathon, Ultra, and Sprint. I made a rivalry with a friend from a nearby highschool and we raced to get under 1 minute on Sprint. Bear in mind the DAS on FB TF was horrid so I tapped for each cell I wanted the block to go to leading to some awkward habits.

Next, I got into Tetris Online Japan from a How-To guide on HardDrop. I thought it was the epitome of all things Tetris, so I played it to death, and tried to make my stats graph bigger, since I thought if I had a big graph, I was a good player. I was always impressed by anyone over 40APM at the time.

I learned about Nullpomino from encouraging words in a thread on HD, so I gave it a try and disliked it initially. Setting it up was strange, and there were many options I was unfamiliar with despite researching. So I stuck with TOJ for the most part until it shut down. In my first semester at my community college (which I dropped out of), I played a lot more Nullpo since it was the only game that was even close to how much TOJ meant to me. And ZeroT showed me how to set my DAS, the fewest words that advanced my gameplay the farthest.

A few months after dropping the Engineering course, I began to archive my Sprint scores: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL2DE3563B1BEE928C&feature=mh_lolz
Every Sprint video is a new score ranging from when I got 51.10s, to my recent 31.55s.

I also have a blog I very rarely post on that kept track of some of my progress http://yotipot.blogspot.com/

In the past few months, I learned finesse which has helped me improve even more.

Wait a second.

PurpleCoin, you previously stated you are currently ten years old. For that, I was very impressed by your proportionate achievements and even voted POTM for you. But now, you claim to have played for 6-7 years, thus implying you started Tetris at the latest possible age of around 4.

You cannot possibly be insinuating that you started an intellectually stimulating game like Tetris at the age of 4, that you were actually intellectual capable at the time of effectively utilizing the mental skills required to even play Tetris at all and basic stack.

Nobody will condemn you. Your reputation as a forum member will be preserved. But please take this opportunity to come forth with full honestly. Are you truly ten years old? Or did you truly play for 6-7 years? I understand your desperate desire to achieve POTM, but trust me there are more efficient and worthwhile paths to follow instead.

Swagsushi, first and foremost:

Nice name.

Secondly, welcome to HD! Apparently you created this account last year but judging how you have no history of past threads, I assume you never formally introduced yourself to the HD community.

Which I highly suggest you do right now! We all would love to get to know you, and hope you contribute on our forums and develop as a Tetris player.

And develop you shall, because this is a pretty high-tier community always willing to help out. First off, CALL UP TETRIS BATTLE AND BREAK UP RIGHT NOW. I want you to meet some new ladies: Nullpomino (nullpo), Tetris of Poland (TOP), and Cultris II (C2). While there are certainly even more Tetris clients out there, these three are easily the most popular and very entertaining.

Here are the download links for them:

Nullpomino = http://nullpo.it.cx/

Tetris of Poland = http://tetrisonline.pl/top/download.php

Cultris II aka The Best Game On Earth = http://gewaltig.net/

Just in case the link for Cultris II didn't go through for some reason, here it is again: http://gewaltig.net/

And one more time: http://gewaltig.net/

Hint: You should kinda sorta download Cultris II.

Anyyyyhow, looking forward to your official introduction man! Welcome to HD Wink.png

Understood, thank you for deleting the history of a very shameful act on my part.

On a brighter note:

Yo Polaris! You for real homie? Did you honestly become exposed to Tetris at the unprecedented age of two, or was this all a Panda-esque troll attempt?

I ask because I'm quite fondly interested in the concept of child prodigies. Or, more realistically, simply advanced children who display an impressive grasp of mental functionality at an exceptionally young age. If anyone here has examples of such an experience, then please let me know, and I'd love to conduct some further investigations via PM regarding the matter.

Wow, I can't believe how many HD members were exposed to Tetris at such an early age!

I actually sent Estrelleta a separate PM regarding this similar matter, but Xael can you tell me more in-depth about your childhood exposure to Tetris and your precise skill-level at the time?

Were there any external variables you feel are worth mentioning, maybe a particularly enlightening and cultivating environment, or simply an exceptionally early display of developed intelligence on your part. Anything you feel is worth mentioning, please feel free to post, which applies to anyone with relevant information!

And yes, I acknowledge the strong tempting troll-potential of this topic (trust me, I know). But this is a pretty serious topic for me and I'd appreciate your genuine cooperation.

when i was studying [early nineties], computers were still relatively uncommon and I didn't have one. A friend of mine did, and she showed me several games you could play [what else could you use these things for]. Anyway since then i just love tetris. I soon bought a handheld 'brickgame', but never a Nintendo and i didn't get a computer until the early 2000's. Of course i then did had a tetrisgame on it, tetrablox i believe, but i never got around to considering playing tetris on internet until december 2010. Then i bumped into tetrisfriends. I wasn't very good at it, and gameplay was immediately truly horrible [lag, misdrops, missing keystrokes and such mumblrrrgrrr]. I decided that my greatest flaw was speed, so i started to fiercly practise sprint. The games i already knew [1989, n-blox] i wanted to save for later because they were not so 'hot' for me back then. I made swift progress, my first games were over 2 minutes, but within half a year i played games of around 60 seconds. Since then progress became slow, i'm currently around 40 seconds. I also bumped into the harddrop forum when trying to improve my gameplay. Learned about the nullpominogame and toj, but i was too late for toj.

So there I am, a man of over 40 years of age, a newbie to tetris.

I use several screennames, mainly: on tetrisfriends I'm denkvrouwtje' derived from the word 'denkfoutje' which is commonly used in the Netherlands, and means as much as 'a flaw of reasoning', of course it is a totally silly name since i'm a man and 'vrouwtje' means 'woman'. But i'm not a woman-hater or anything else, so please don't take too much notice. I just had to quickly think up an unused yet catchy screenname at the time. On nullpomino I'm 'atomitekke', else I'm tomtek and tiktak and sometimes just plain 'taeke' which is just my name. that's it. hope you have fun

Blink can - but he is old as dirt.

I began playing Tetris on my GameBoy color at the tender age of 6 years. After I got a certain skill, I stopped playing Tetris DX and played 1989 Tetris exclusively. Roughly 4 years ago, I started playing multiplayer Tetris on Multris. One and a half year ago, I settled over to Cultris. I had created my HD account to find a good alternative to Multris, but nobody mentioned Cultris back then Crying.png . So curse you all! VeryAngry.png

A gaming youtuber I like to watch was playing Tetris on his channel and it looked like a fun game so I googled Free Tetris so I could play it myself. I became addicted almost instantaneously.

Posted by: oofw Jun 28 2013, 03:55 AM

where did it start ?

wow, what a good question. well for me , it all started two or three years ago. i was a first year and didnt know anyone , so at lunch i usually hung out at the library and played on my ds everyday and one of the games that i played was tetris ! long story short , i mastered the game and wanted more,

more,

more !

so i went and saw how fast people were going.. holy sh... i mean crap! 150 tetrominoes per minute ? that's insane!

after a few months of playing i've finally reached it but i'm not ready to stop just yet. i'm always looking forwards. i try to stay positive because it is just too easy to be negative no matter how hard life gets. that's what tetris means to me.

so what IS tetris , you ask ?

well... Wink.png

thx for reading my post.

Posted by: shahil Jun 28 2013, 11:54 AM

i never saw this thread !

i guess i first started to play tetris in March-April 2009... and wow can't believe that's over 5 years ago!
but i quit for almost a year and just came back recently so yeah.. i don't know if anyone remembers him but Hunter910 got me into tetris.. well actually his sister when i saw her play i wanted to know what that game was.. he told me "tetris" i went home started playing and got addicted straight away >_>

First played some version of tetris in my uncle's office in Moscow when I was 7. Found out about TF by watching Dyrus stream 17 months ago: he would play arena games while waiting for his queue to pop... Eventually I made an account and started playing.

Must've been around early 1999, (maybe earlier) I was a 7yo living in Elektrostal, Soviet Russia, Central Oblast. Didn't have a PC, don't think I got my PS1 until a bit later; I had only got my hands on some crappy non-color Russian handheld (games came already installed onto it, no cartridges), as far as video games of any sort go.

I don't really remember the circumstances, but I know I didn't get to see my uncle much. So one day he decides to show me the place he works at (might not have been in Moscow, but was probably around that area). I remember a lengthy drive. Once I got there (I don't remember what he did, but he worked in some sort of office), I suppose he wanted to get some actual work done, so he set me up at some computer and showed me how to open games up. I only remember playing the tetris game and some other quake or doom game (might have been Doom I or II, don't know).

Pretty sure I played using space bar and arrow keys, meaning the game had no hold and single rot (had color though =D). Never played that version again since that day, and have no idea what it even is.

Then again, I also remember playing games on a computer at my mom's brokerage office too, so maybe it was there that I played tetris. If that's the case this whole story's pointless, thanks for reading. Grin.png

Between then and 2012, I only sparsely played various flash versions of tetris online to pass small amounts of time. These included miniclip tetris and n-blox.

Everyone is different with what style they play tetris. I can play with no items and no maps but unlike everyone I don't feel confident or pro when i play without party items and combo maps. Playing classic maps with no items to me is like a puzzle but hard to rank up and same when i have nothing i play as a rank 18 everywhere else except party and combo. I think what got me into items was how much i enjoyed super tetris when i was little it was a pc game my mom had that was made in 1991

What is your style ? is it maps or items or neither and how did you start ? what makes tetris exciting for you?

P.s - I am not good with grammar and this is my first forum so be easy on me haha Hot.png

I began playing in the womb, I found an old game boy lodged in there with a copy of Tetris inserted. I never asked how it got there..

The problem was I had to stop playing after a mere 2 months. The ultrasound messed with the electronics, so exclaiming that the game was now "A piece of shit", I lodged it into my mothers colon, and it was disposed of.

I started to play Tetris when the Game Boy was a brand new console. I'm a casual Tetris gamer only, but I started to learn Processing (processing.org) which you can use to do some art/video/music mix, like games, quickly. I made a basic version of Tetris in two weeks and I found it awesome. That was a couple of years ago, in the last months I decided that I wanted to finish it and publish it, and I've made it and released it the same day of my birthday (22 of October) as a present for me and you.

Played Tetris since I was a toddler and stopped playing.

But in 2012, I started to get crazed with Tetris since I play Tetris Revolution on my old Nokia 3230 phone. Thanks to its uplifting music (Korobeiniki), it makes Tetris even more enjoyable. I still play Tetris (but mostly Puyo Puyo) until now. So, that equals to 5 years playing Tetris (and Puyo)

Posted by: CosmicCommunist Jan 8 2017, 09:41 PM

Probably started playing it when I was 7 or 8 years old. I've been playing it for as long as I can remember, but I've only been playing it seriously since the end of last August, although my PPS has only but doubled since then. They told me I'd be sub 60 within 2 months. I'm only sub 90. But yeah. Trust me, you don't want to know why I started getting into Tetris seriously. It's quite TMI. But let's just say during one week of August, something changed in me that made me realize I really, REALLY love Tetris Sticking Out Tongue.png

Posted by: WasKilledBy Jan 9 2017, 06:59 PM

The first time I played Tetris was when I was about 6-7 years old. Give or take a couple of years. But I have not been serious about it until April of 2015 when I discovered Tetris friends.

Posted by: anakin57 Jan 19 2017, 11:27 PM

Been playing since the late 80's when I got the orig Game Boy - still the best puzzle game ever created.

Posted by: Tetrian Mar 12 2017, 05:23 PM

The earliest memory that I have of playing Tetris was on the Gameboy Color from one of my brother's friends. Then a few years ago I started playing it on my iPhone, then the addiction spread to the PS 4, then PC.

I found this old gameboy with the original gameboy tetris on it when moving all of my grandma's stuff out of her house. It wasn't very fun, but I sought out other versions and mostly played android tetris at first, then really started getting into it once I figured out I could play on Nullpomino and Tetris with Friends

Posted by: IzzyBells Feb 25 2018, 09:26 PM

It was in about 2013 I first started playing it every once in a while when my cousin told me to get good at Tetris for a "real challenge" on a family vacation when I was playing Mega Man on my phone. I played it for the first time with a NES emulator around that time, and it became a game that I played on and off for a while. Then, during AGDQ 2015, I watched the TGM block and I was blown away. It made me want to really dedicate myself to Tetris, and since then, it's been my main game in whatever version I was interested in at the time.

So basically 2013 was when I first played it, and 2015 was the year I got into it.

Posted by: OliWins Jul 15 2018, 05:58 AM

I first played Tetris when my sister got me the GameBoy game, I sucked and could barely get 4 lines before losing everytime.

Didn't really play again until I was 16/17 and my girlfriend at the time was really into the game and I started playing with her (also heard it was good for problem solving and quick thinking) and just kept playing since then.

Been playing since May. I've been bored in class and the night before I got recommended some video from the TCWC. I was interested and so it began.

I started playing because it was one of the better TI-83 calculator games back in the day. Then it got popular on facebook and I wanted to beat all my friends. I was introduced to the competitive scene when I stumbled on sirjeivus' videos on youtube, which brought be to harddrop, and the rest is history.

When I was younger (10?), I liked the game for the music. I found a handheld LCD version of the game at a garage sale, and I've been a fan of Tetris since then.

my friend started playing tetris. it was his first time and he was a natural, he got 77,000 and that's then i got addicted, i started trying to beat his high score and that's when my entire class joined in the tetris train. unfortunately most of then got off but we still have 3-5 people who are playing

and it was 7 months of tetris addiction and my sprint time of 48.51s shows that. and i don't think ill quit tetris anytime soon

I have been playing Tetris for 4 months now and my love for this game never ended.
Starting in September 2018 with Tetris The Ultimate on PS4 recommended by my father as an old game he used to play on his Game Boy.
After having discovered a free game on PC named NullpoMino, I played a lot of TGM clones before finally playing Puyo Puyo Tetris which also gave me this other puzzle game I still play today.
Last month, I played Tetris Effect with its beautiful graphics and musics.
I am still looking for other Tetris games and hopping to see new ones coming.

I've only been playing NES tetris for a few months now and start at 16. I played a lot of tetris on a handheld videogame console I had for a while. I want to learn more about different types of emulators etc. that can help me improve.

Posted by: keychera Feb 26 2019, 08:59 AM

I know tetris since child but it was just another game that I know until I watched one particular vid.
that one youtube vid by kaia/doremy showing him playing against a Puyo player by doing 4 wide in a very clutched situation. it was at that point, I started thinking "oh wow that way of playing tetris looks cool and fun!". Then, I watched more tetris videos, mostly puyo2tetris meme videos (SLIGHT DISADVANTAGE), and then I found wumbo's channel and watch more tetris vid and I ultimately decided to try it myself.

and now I'm here

I grew up playing Windows Tetris on our old Windows95 computer back in the 90ís. I think I was 3 or 4 years old when I started.
