Sony's Xperia Play will be available in the U.S. May 26.

Early last month, Sony Ericsson introduced the Xperia Play in markets including the U.K., Germany, Russia, Hong Kong and Taiwan, rolling out more than 60 games optimized expressly for the device. According to Sony Ericsson, the game lineup--which includes Need for Speed, Assassins Creed Altair's Chronicles HD, N.O.V.A.2 and Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell--bring together classic PlayStation titles, popular casual games and 3D efforts that leverage the Xperia Play's graphical capabilities. Sony Ericsson has so far forged partnerships with over 20 game developers, ensuring a steady flow of new Xperia Play releases.

At the CTIA Wireless 2011 event in March, Todd Murphy--director of Verizon's consumer solutions group--told FierceMobileContent that the Xperia Play will feature a customized version of V Cast Apps that promotes games optimized for the phone. "Whenever you flip open the device, it goes to all the games you have loaded and recommends other high-quality games that are using the D-pad and using the graphics processor, and everything deep-links into our store," Murphy said. "It's a seamless shopping experience for the customer." Verizon also encourages programmers to visit its Game Development portal for additional insight into creating Xperia Play titles, vowing developers can focus on content and not binary file size concerns during the V Cast Apps submission process.
