"It may not be as sexy as more modern games like StarCraft II orModern Warfare, but venerable old Tetris still has its hardcore players, who last year got together for the Classic Tetris World Championship.

Filmmaker Adam Cornelius was there to document the whole thing, and in the process was able to put together a full-length documentary titled Ecstasy of Order: The Tetris Masters.

The championships were held last August, with contestants forced to play, as the competition's name suggests, the "classic" NES version of the puzzler. Overseen by creator Alexey Pajitnov, over 200 players entered, with the winner (SPOILER: here) taking home $1000 and a big-ass trophy.

What makes this documentary more interesting than some footage of people playing a decades-old game is the fact it goes beyond the tournament. Cornelius says he's looked at the entire history of competitive Tetris, from the 1990 Nintendo World Championships to the present day.

It's his second doco on Tetris, after Max-Out!, but this one looks a little slicker. You can check out its homepage at the link below."

all the cool kids play NES... agreement on Kitaru = pro ;. In terms of movies featuring more than just NES... thats what sequels are for lol! seriously though the Classic tetris world championship could become, one day, a mutliplatform tetris convention. Hell star trek has em, and we are much cooler than star trek (although i am a trekkie)

Y'all guys are whack. NES is a masterpiece along with Sega and TGM. I guess Nullpomino clones all of those things pretty accurately, but real hardware is nicer.

yeah it's very unfortunate that they don't use better tetris games like nullpomino

(Also, I Amtrak'd back to SJ so I could make summer classes for that week, haha. I caught a ride with another player on the way down, but their plans in the area extended a couple days past the end of the event.)

Ayo anon, don't hate on NEStris -- the game is dope. Triple_Lei: If we're ever in the same neck of the woods again, we should make an effort to meet up. Perhaps someone will hold another event like this some day down the line, but I'm always down for random Tetris meets as well. :)

I saw Kitaru in person when I was there! Of course I didn't know who he or anyone else was at the time. And for some reason I remember overhearing that he took Amtrak or something to get to the tournament. Dunno why I remember all the little details...
