"The iconic Russian video game Tetris will be brand-new again once Electronic Arts releases its latest varient on the storied puzzle game when it releases for download via PlayStation Network in December.Tetris PSN gets a facelift with 1080p HD graphics and features three new gameplay modes that are exclusive to the PS3.

The new Tetris title also supports competitive and co-operative multiplayer, allowing for up to four players to play at the same time either in teams or against one another. Alexey Pajitnov, who createdTetris in 1984, thinks his game going multiplayer is the way Tetris now should be.

"That's the next step for Tetris," Pajitnov tells News10 Game Guy Barry White. "So far Tetris has always been a solitaire game but it has so much potential as a multiplayer game."

In addition to the updated HD graphics and the multiplayer options, Tetris PSN also will have global and regional online leaderboard where gamers can watch replays of the world's highest-ranking Tetrisplayers while tracking their own in-game stats, comparing them against other players from around the world.

As for what's next for Tetris after this upcoming PSN release?

"I want to see it in stadiums." jokes Pajitnov.

Cool interview, I hope tetris will grow like Alexey Pajitnov wants it to grow =) Multiplayer, hardcore players, and stadiums, that's getting just right ;P

Notice how the question about clones was worded in terms of "the brand" (that is, trademark) as opposed to anything I could identify as copyright.

Blink you should get an interview of either Henk Rogers or Pajitnov for HD. That would be epic

Nice interview. I thought I heard him say a while back he really wanted it to turn out as more of a strategy game than something based on speed but now he's saying the awesome stuff we like. Yay.

Yeah, thought you'd like that. I like how he finally mentions "hardcore players", "very fast players", and focusing on multiplayer.
