Accordind to site's faq:

What happened to the previous version of

Effective September 1, 2010, the ownership of was transferred to
Tetris Online, the exclusive online licensee
of The Tetris Company of all rights to the
world–famous electronic game called Tetris® in North America and Europe.

As a result of this transfer, Tetris Online has updated with several changes, including:
  • You are no longer requested to supply your e–mail address
  • Interstitial screens with paid advertisements have been removed
  • Paid advertisements surrounding the game have been removed
  • An official version of the Tetris game, known as Tetris® N–Blox™ has been added

the engine was still less laggy than the tetris friends engine, albiet with fail das and no double rotate

If by "official" you mean "the same game as before but licensed," then yeah, I guess that's official. It isn't like the bad engine changed at all, though.
