"The time has come to name a champion.
Former Nintendo World Champion and Tetris expert Robin Mihara has brought together the greatest Classic Tetris players for an event like no other. For the first time, record holding players from around the country will meet in competition before a live audience. No more internet scoreboards, no more second chances, just a good old fashioned face-to-face live tournament for the ages.
Tournament Format
Held at the Downtown Independent Theater in Los Angeles, California, the Classic Tetris World Championship will be an all-day event open to the public. Come test your skills against the world's greatest players and compete for a spot in the semi-finals! See below for more info.

When: August 8th, 2010. Qualifying round at noon, Semi-Finals at 3PM, Finals at 6PM. After Party at 7.
Where: Downtown Independent Theater 251 S. Main Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012
Admission: $10 (includes one qualifying attempt. Additional attempts available for $3)
The Classic Tetris World Championship will utilize the classic Nintendo NES program of the game. The preferred format of first gen hardcore Tetris players, this version has no hold chamber, infinite spin, lock delay, or any other helpful additions found in newer versions. This is a game with no room for error.
The QUALIFYING ROUND will consist of 3 minute rounds of NES Tetris. Top two highest scores win seats in the semi-finals against our panel of former record-holders and champions.
The SEMI-FINALS will consist of 3 rounds of complete Tetris games starting from level 9. Round 1 will be an attempt for the most lines, and rounds 2 and 3 will be attempts for most points. Top two combined scores will meet in the finals.
The FINALS will be a head to head, best 2 out of 3 for most points starting on any level. The winner will be crowned Classic Tetris World Champion."

Yeah I'm surprised they don't use the Tetris/Dr.Mario version that has Versus.
